Background and Identification

The Wii U GameCube Adapter is an add-on for the Wii U that allows you to connect GameCube controllers to the console. The product was first announced in 2014 at the end of the Super Smash Bros. Invitational trailer. The device is made from black plastic in a rectangular shape with curved sides. The front has four GameCube controller ports and the back has two USB cables that stick out and are meant to be attached to either the front pair or back pair of USB ports on a Wii U.

Attaching a GameCube controller to any of the ports on the adapter allows you to use it with the Wii U; however, it will only be usable in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U as explained in this Nintendo support article. If you’re a fan of the GameCube controller style, but not the wires, the adapter also works perfectly well with WaveBird wireless controllers, and the ports are spaced perfectly to fit four WaveBird receivers next to each other. As shown off in this compatibility test, you can even play 8-player Smash if you attach two of these adapters to your Wii U.

To identify this product, look on the bottom for the model number “WUP-028.” Official Nintendo adapters will bear this model number and will have the Wii U logo on the top side. Adapters from other brands will likely have other logos but seem to share the same/similar shape.
