Background

A ventilator is a respiratory device that pumps air into the lungs of people who are unable to breathe on their own. The Bear Cub 750 is a ventilator specifically for infants and small children weighing up to 66lbs (30kg). It was produced from 2003 to 2004 by Viasys Healthcare, Inc., which was acquired by Cardinal Health in 2007. The device was intended for use across the US and Britain and has had no recalls or notable press attention. The cost of the ventilator was around the range of $3,000-$5,000.

There are three different ventilation modes: assisted control, SIMV/IMV, and CPAP. The 750vs has integrated synchronized ventilation and tidal volume monitoring, as well as includes independent base and inspiratory flows. It has an internal battery backup. There are no known common failures, but after continued use the exhalation valve and flow sensor may need to be replaced.

Identification

You can identify the Viasys Bear Cub Ventilator by its appearance: its color is predominantly white, with some gray over the sections containing the adjusting knobs. In the top left corner in blue is the brand “Viasys” and on the right in gray is “Bear Cub 750 infant ventilator.” There are three different color sections of lights (from top to bottom): yellow, red, and green.
