Background and Identification
The Tesla Model 3 is a plug-in electric four-door sedan designed and produced by Tesla. The first Model 3 vehicle was produced on July 7, 2017, while the official launch of the model was not until July 28, 2017. In 2018 and 2019, the Model 3 was the world’s best-selling plug-in electric car, and the top-selling plug-in vehicle in the United States. The Tesla Model 3 is the world’s top-selling electric car in history, with over 500,000 vehicles delivered as of March 2020.
In 2006, Elon Musk presented the Model 3 with the goal of being an affordable car for the mass market. The Model 3 is part of Tesla’s plan to move toward lower-cost vehicles by paying for the improved battery and electric drivetrain through sales of the Roadster, Model S, and Model X cars. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus variant provides 250 miles of all-electric range, and the Long Range variant provides 322 miles. The Model 3 includes complete self-driving hardware that is periodically updated. It includes a five-passenger seating capacity, sports-car acceleration performance, and front and rear trunks. The Model 3 is 20 percent smaller than the Model S cars.
Just one week after unveiling the Model 3, Tesla announced that it had over 325,000 reservations for the vehicle, which required a refundable deposit of $1000 USD. 93 percent of Model 3 reservations were from buyers who did not currently own another Tesla model. In February 2019, retail deliveries in Europe and China began.
Many customers reported long stopping distances in emergency braking tests and problems including glass defects, loose body trim, and difficult-to-use controls. In December 2019, a Model 3 experienced a rear inverter short after only 5,286 miles.
Tesla vehicles can be identified by the Tesla emblem, which includes a ‘T’ that is curved on the top and pointed at the bottom, with a curved line over the top of the ‘T.’ The emblem also includes the name ‘Tesla’ in all capital letters underneath the ‘T.’
