Background and Identification

The Smiths Medical 1884SS is a handheld pulse oximeter made by Smiths Medical. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. Smiths Medical is a designer and manufacturer of medical devices for general anesthesia, respiratory care, cardiology, pain management, and other medical areas.

The 1884SS model measures the patient’s pulse rate, pulse strength, and oxygen saturation. It can be used to spot-check these values in hospital or clinical environments. The oximeter can collect long-term data in overnight sleep screening studies. The 1884SS monitor can be used for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients for spot-checking applications. For sleep screening applications, this monitor can be used for adult and pediatric patients when using the appropriate accessories.

The Smiths Medical 1884SS is not designed for continuous patient monitoring because there are no audible or visible patient alarms. In overnight screening applications, users can print summed data results. This model features three modes of operation: Verification Mode, Data Collection Mode, and Trend Printing Mode. The Verification Mode is intended for spot-checking. The Data Collection Mode allows for long-term data collection in sleep-screening environments. The Trend Printing Mode outputs summarized trend data to the monitor’s built-in printer or to a PC.
