Background and Identification

The Smiths Medical 1818R is a pulse oximeter made by Smiths Medical. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. Smiths Medical is a designer and manufacturer of medical devices for general anesthesia, respiratory care, cardiology, pain management, and other medical areas.

The 1818R pulse oximeter measures the patient’s pulse rate and oxygen saturation. It can be used in clinical, hospital, emergency, or transport environments with adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. This model is compatible with all BCI, Inc. oximetry sensors.

The 1818R oximeter weighs nine ounces without batteries and is small enough to fit in the palm of an adult’s hand. It can be powered either by three standard alkaline batteries (type LR 14) or three rechargeable (type KR27/50) “C” cell batteries. In the oximeter’s continuous mode, the batteries can last up to 24 hours but can last up to 80 hours in spot-check mode. When approximately two hours of battery use remains, the monitor’s low-battery indicator lights alert the user.

The monitor’s LED displays present the patient’s pulse rate in beats per minute and oxygen saturation as a percentage. The patient’s pulse strength is displayed on an eight-segment LED bar graph. When the patient’s finger is removed from the oximetry sensor, the monitor automatically turns off to save battery life.
