Background & Identification
The Siemens Kion was released in 2002. Siemens is a well-known technology company that has done consistent work in healthcare machinery and technology. The KION specifically is a modular anesthesia machine for both adults and children. The machine consists of three parts which include the trolley, the column, and the integrated user interface. This machine is not intended or sold for personal use, and is intended for trained medical professionals and their practices only. The price for this complete system is between $1,085 and $6,035. The only found recall according to the FDA was in 2005, which was for a software update to increase functionality. Generally, reviews are high, ranging from 4 stars to 5 stars. This is the only model of the KION, but Siemens makes other anesthesia machines that have come to replace the KION as they are newer.
The device is a large machine on wheels with three main sections with smaller components:
- The trolley: main pneumatic inlets, power supply, power inlets, battery, communication ports, and gas delivery system.
- The column: vaporizer holder, servo bellows absorber, and patient cassette
- The integrated user interface: control panel and monitor
The machine also says "Siemens" in white letters inside a teal block on every component of the machine, and on the top section of the trolley it says KION in grey letters.
