BACKGROUND
SNK was founded in 1978 as Shin Nihon Kikahu but shortened its name to SNK in 1981.
Through the 1980's they created many arcade cabinets and games for third party manefacturers.
In 1988 SNK created the NEO GEO MVS arcade cabinet which used a cartridge based storage system allowing arcade owners to switch games out rather than replacing the whole cabinet, the system debuted in 1990 and could have one, two, four or six slots for games.
SNK then created the NEO GEO AES, a home console without the compromises that other home consoles were forced to make. Initially released only as a rental in hotel settings, increased intrest from the public lead them to start selling them through stores debuting at $599 (equivalent to $1287 in 2022) with games starting at $200!
SNK later went on to produce the NEO GEO CD home console the hyper 64 arcade system and two hand held consoles the NEO GEO pocket and the NEO GEO pocket color.
In 2001 SNK released the NEO GEO X a homage to the original AES,then in 2018 they released the NEO GEO mini a miniature version of their arcade system then the following year they released the Arcade stick pro an arcade stick pre loaded with games and usable on the NEO GEO mini.
