Background

Released in 2020, the Ryobi Chain Saw RY3716 is a 16-inch, 2-cycle gas chain saw and features a 37 cc engine. This chain saw is still available for purchase. Ryobi uses a chain brake, a guide bar, a low kickback saw chain, and a nose guard to enhance safety. Other safety features include an anti-vibe handle to ensure proper hand placement and grip as well as an inertia-activated chain break to combat rotational kickback. Ryobi also included an automatic oiler for the chain. The oiler is only used when the chainsaw is in use. The oiler is driven by the sprocket (the teeth that drive the chain saw).

Used by construction workers, landscapers, and average Joes, Ryobi's gas-powered chain saw sells for $219. This chainsaw is most like the 14-inch gas chain saw also in the Ryobi family, sharing some of the same parts and an owner's manual. The steps to power on and off as well as the maintenance of both the 14 and 16-inch chain saws are the same. The general consensus is that this chainsaw (model #RY3716) is more durable than an electric chain saw. There are no known manufacturer recalls.

The main complaints about this chainsaw are that it is not built for long periods of use. After two hours, the chain saw's performance significantly drops. The lifetime of this chain saw seems to be only a few months of regular use. The chain loosens making the tool impossible to use. This is a tool built for random projects around the house instead of professionals who will use it daily.

The electric alternative to this chain saw is the 13AMP 16-inch chain saw (model #RY43155). The electric version also uses an automatic oiler and an automatic chain break for safety. The customer reviews of both chain saws are fairly similar with the gas chain saw ranking slightly higher at 4.7 stars out of 5 instead of the electric's 4.6. Both chain saws should be used for small and periodic jobs.
