Background and Identification

Respironics is an American medical supply company, founded in 1976 by Gerald McGinnis , that specializes in products that improve respiratory functions. It is based in the Pittsburgh suburb of Murrysville in Pennsylvania, United States. Its parent company is Philips, a Dutch multinational conglomerate corporation that was founded in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

In April 2020, the United States Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) entered into a contract with Philips Respironics for 43,000 bundled hospital ventilators. This included the production and delivery of ventilators to the Strategic National Stockpile—about 156,000 by the end of August 2020 and 187,000 more by the end of 2020. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, beginning in March 2020, in response to an international demand, Philips increased production of the ventilators fourfold within five months.

The BiPAP Synchrony system is a noninvasive, pressure support ventilator used to augment the breathing of adult patients suffering from acute or chronic respiratory insufficiency, and to maintain airway patency. It may also be used to support patients who experience obstructive sleep apnea, but is not intended to provide the total ventilatory requirements of the patient. The Synchrony ventilator incorporates a control panel with a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Light-Emitting Diode (LED), operational keys and internal audible and visual alarms. It also has an option for an internal modem that can be connected directly to your phone line via an RJ-11 jack.

The Synchrony ventilator contains Digital Auto-Trak Sensitivity that continually monitors and adjusts to the user’s breathing patterns, and along with RiseTime control that allows for greater user comfort. With easy-to-understand controls and a compact, lightweight design this ventilatory is a revolutionary machine that can be upgraded as the user needs change.
