Background and Identification
The Nissan Pathfinder is a mid-size crossover SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured by Nissan Motors since 1985. The Pathfinder is derived from Nissan's compact pickup truck platform and has been produced over four generations. Outside of North America, the Nissan Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Nissan Pathfinder.
Between 1986 and 1995, the Pathfinder was classified as a compact SUV. It was considered a mid-size SUV between 1995 and 2012, and was classified as a mid-size crossover SUV from 2012 and on. Since its introduction in 1985, the Pathfinder has been available in a front-engine, four-wheel-drive layout. Between 1985 and 2012, the Pathfinder was also sold with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Beginning in 2013, the Pathfinder was available in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.
The Nissan Pathfinder was first introduced as a two-door or four-door SUV. The second-, third, and fourth-generation dropped the two-door and four-door SUV options in favor of a five-door SUV body style.
Nissan Pathfinder vehicles include the Nissan emblem, which depicts the name “Nissan” in capital letters on a banner inside of a circle. The name “Pathfinder” is often included in capital letters on the left-hand side of the rear end of Pathfinder vehicles. The trim level is generally included on the right-hand side of the rear end of Pathfinder cars.
