Background and Identification

The Nellcor Puritan Bennett NPB-290 is a pulse oximeter made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The NPB-290 model is designed to continuously monitor the patient’s pulse rate and functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin. It is suitable for use with adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. This model is designed for use in the home, the hospital, and in all hospital-type facilities. When powered by its internal battery, this monitor can also be used during intra-hospital transport.

The pulse oximeter produces audible and visible alarms when a variable moves outside pre-set limits. Users can silence the audible alarms by pressing a button next to the monitor’s display. The operator can adjust high and low alarm limits for pulse rate and oxygen saturation using the four softkeys on the monitor’s front face. A digital display indicates the patient’s oxygen saturation and pulse rate. A 10-segment LED bar shows the patient’s pulse amplitude.

The NPB-290 pulse oximeter includes the name “NELLCOR PURITAN BENNETT” printed in capital letters above the device’s display. The model number, ‘NPB-290,’ is also printed above the monitor’s display. A saturated oxygen sensor port is placed in the upper left-hand corner of the monitor’s front face. The monitor’s speaker is located in the lower left-hand corner of the model’s front cover.
