Background and Identification

The Nellcor Puritan Bennett NPB-195 is a portable pulse oximeter made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The NPB-195 is intended for continuous measurement of the patient’s functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin and pulse rate. A plethysmographic waveform or a ten-segment bar is used to indicate pulse intensity. The pulse rate and oxygen saturation are displayed digitally. It is designed for use with adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. This model can be used in hospitals or hospital-type facilities, during intra-hospital transport, and in homes. The NPB-195 model operates either on AC power or on a rechargeable internal battery.

The NPB-195 pulse oximeter includes the name “NELLCOR PURITAN BENNETT” printed in capital letters above the device’s display. The model number, ‘NPB-195,’ is also printed above the monitor’s display. Using four softkeys on the front of the monitor, the operator can choose the language, adjust the internal time clock, access trend information, set alarm limits, and change communications protocols.

For troubleshooting, disassembly, and repair information, see the Nellcor Puritan Bennett NPB-195 Service Manual. Common problems include failure to power on, randomly shutting down, failure to respond to buttons, non-responsive display, faulty readings, and failure of the serial port to function properly.
