Background and Identification

The Nellcor N-85 is a portable pulse oximeter made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. It is sometimes called the OxiMax N-85 pulse oximeter. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The N-85 model measures oxygen saturation, end-tidal carbon dioxide, respiratory rate, and pulse rate values. It can be used for continuous monitoring or spot-checking for bedside monitoring and emergency situations. It is suitable for use with adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. A low sample flow rate of 50 mL per minute allows the device to monitor a wide range of patients. This pulse oximeter is compatible with OxiMax sensors.

The Nellcor N-85 is powered by a rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack. It is operated using a four-key keypad. Two seven-segment LED digital displays present oxygen saturation and end-tidal carbon dioxide levels. An LCD graphic display shows the patient’s respiratory rate, pulse rate, and plethysmographic waveform.

The model name “N-85” is printed in the upper left-hand corner of the monitor’s front face. The name “NELLCOR” is printed in capital letters in the bottom center of the device’s front face. The N-85 model weighs under two pounds.
