Background and Identification

The Nellcor N-200 is a pulse oximeter made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The Nellcor N-200 pulse oximeter measures the patient’s pulse rate and functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin. Measurements are updated at each pulse beat. Measurements are taken using a reusable clip-on or disposable adhesive patch attached to the patient’s finger. The monitor automatically self-calibrates when it is turned on or when a new sensor is connected.

This model includes the N-200 pulse oximeter, an interface/powerbase, and a patient module. The interface/powerbase functions as a detachable AC power supply and an external interface for the monitor. The powerbase provides isolated power for the monitor and also charges its internal batteries. Its batteries can last up to two hours during transport or power failures. Whenever the monitor is connected to AC power, the battery is recharged.

The words “NELLCOR PULSE OXIMETER” are printed in capital letters in the upper left-hand corner of the device’s front face. A control knob and five buttons are located on the right-hand side of the monitor’s front face. The patient’s oxygen saturation is displayed as a percent on the upper LED display. The patient’s pulse rate is displayed in beats per minute on the lower LED display.
