Background and Identification

The Nellcor Intouch is a remote oximetry notification system made by Medtronic's Nellcor division. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors. The Nellcor Intouch system connects to a compatible pulse oximeter with an appropriate cable. When the pulse oximeter produces an alarm, the Intouch transmitter sends the alarm to a designated pager.

The Intouch system is an alarm notification system designed to work with the Nellcor NPB-290, NPB-295, N-395, and N-300 pulse oximetry models. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor Intouch system connects to a compatible pulse oximeter with an appropriate cable. When the pulse oximeter produces an alarm, the Intouch transmitter sends the alarm to a designated pager. The Intouch pager is typically worn by a caregiver. When an alarm is produced, the pager displays the patient’s bed number, alarm type, and the patient’s monitored parameters. The Nellcor Intouch system serves as a redundant mechanism to alert clinical staff of important patient events. This device is suitable for continuously monitoring adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.

The Nellcor Intouch system includes the name “NELLCOR Intouch” on the top of the device. Other identifying information may be printed on the device’s front face, such as the word “COMPAQ.”

Technical Specifications

Single Alarm Response Time: Patient alarms will be received by the pager within 10 seconds for single patient alarm events.

Multiple Alarm Response Time: In the case of separate, simultaneous alarms at five transmitters, all alarms will be received by the pager within 60 seconds.

Configuration: Within one Intouch system, up to 24 transmitters and 12 pagers may operate on one frequency and be programmable by one programmer.

  • Up to 6 sets of 24 transmitters, each set operating on its own channel, may be used in the same hospital or healthcare facility.

Transmitter:

  • FCC Approval: FCC part 90
  • Interference-Causing Equipment Standard Compliance: This ISM device complies with Canadian ICES-001
  • Frequency: UHF band, 450 – 466 MHz
  • Input Voltage: +15 volts, 1.5 amps
  • Data Port Input Voltage Requirements from a Modem for Proper Modulation: ±1.5 VDC (3 VDC peak-to-peak)
  • Maximum Data Port Baud Rate: 19,200 Baud
  • Data Port Designed Impedance
    • Input resistance: 3000 – 5000 ohms
    • Output resistance: 10 megohms typical; 300 ohms minimum
  • Antenna Terminal Designed Impedance: 50 ohms

Battery: The transmitter can operate on battery power for approximately 45 minutes, sending one message every 10 minutes (at a baud rate of 512). Nellcor recommends that the battery be replaced every 2 years.
