Background and Identification

An HP Optical Mouse is a computer mouse with a light-source made by Hewlett-Packard. The Hewlett-Packard Company, commonly called Hewlett-Packard or HP, is an American multinational information technology company. HP develops and produces a range of hardware components, software components, and related services to consumers, small businesses, medium-sized businesses, and large enterprises.

An optical mouse is a computer mouse that uses a light source, usually an LED (light-emitting diode), and a light detector to detect movement relative to a flat surface. The light detector can include an array of photodiodes. As opposed to optical mice, mechanical mice use moving parts to sense motion. Many HP optical mice can record precise motion over a range of surfaces without a mouse pad. An optical tracking system uses fewer moving parts for increased durability when compared to ball-based mechanical mice.

An HP Optical Mouse includes a left-click button, a right-click button, and a middle-click/middle-scroll wheel. They are typically made of black plastic and include the HP logo in the center of the mouse’s main body. The HP logo features the letters “HP” in lowercase font inside of a white circle. The mouse was sold either for left-handed or right-handed users based on different contoured shapes.
