Background and Identification

Jaundice meters or Bilirubinometers are devices that measure the concentration of bilirubin in the blood. They come in a variety of configurations according to the WHO. They might be a small hand held device, benchtop or a larger stand alone unit.

They operate by one of two methods, either spectrophotometric analysis which requires a blood sample or skin-reflectance measurements. With the skin-reflectance measurements, a light-emitting sensor is placed on the infant’s skin and wavelengths are measured to determine the bilirubin concentration.
