Background and Identification

An infant ventilator is a device that helps a baby breathe or breathes for the baby. The ventilator is connected to an endotracheal tube, which is inserted into the baby’s windpipe. The ventilator pushes oxygen through the tube to the baby’s lungs. An infant may need a ventilator due to an illness or premature birth. The amount of oxygen can be adjusted as needed.
