Background

The Dräger Cosy II is an anesthesia machine. This machine was made to be compact, making it to be easier to move around in a medical area. This also gives anesthesiologists and patients more options with how much anesthesia is being given and received. This option helps to make the patient as comfortable as possible and feel a type of control in their situation.

This machine comes with additional options that are advanced for the safety and convenience of the user. There are three modes on the Cosy II breathing system:

1. Manual ventilation and spontaneous breathing

2. Volume controlled ventilation

3. Pressure controlled ventilation.

There is hemodynamic monitoring, gas monitoring, or spirometry.

There have been multiple recalls on the APL valve of this machinery; specifically there have been 17 incidents from the year 2006 to 2014. The incidents include failure of manual ventilation, trapped gas resulting in failure of ventilation, wires blocking the APL valve, gas leak, etc.

The Drager Cosy II has now been replaced by the Drager Cosy 2.6.

Identification

The Dräger Cosy II is equipped with a high quality screen, displays of fresh gas, and a tube for gas flow. This tube will help keep up with the measurements of gas flow. This machine contains few parts which makes it simple to not only put together, but also take apart for cleaning. There is an APL (adjustable pressure limiting) valve. This valve is a lever type and has a selector switch which can be used to go between the "MAN" option and the "SPONT" option. On the APL valves with the control knob, the switching from "IPPV/SPONT" to "MAN" is carried out by turning the knob. When the machine is in the "MAN" position, the breathing system is closed to atmosphere so this position is used for manual ventilation of the patient. The valve opening pressure the APL can be adjusted to is from 5 to 70 cmH2O (mbar). The APL valve is open to atmosphere when in the "SPONT" position. This position is used for spontaneous breathing. When using the control box and the PEEP Pmax valve, the pressure limit, also known as the Pmax, can also be adjusted. It can be adjusted during volume control from 15 cmH2O (mbar) to 70 cmH2O (mbar) via the membrane keypad.
