Background and Identification

Dialysis machines are used to clean a patient’s blood when their kidneys can no longer filter toxins from the blood.

In hemodialysis, a patient is connected to a dialysis machine via an intravenous catheter, an arteriovenous fistula, or a synthetic graft. The patient’s blood flows into the dialysis machine, which contains a filter that acts as an artificial kidney to purify the patient’s blood.
