Background and Identification

A defibrillator is a medical device used to treat potentially fatal arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) by transferring electric currents to the heart.

There are a few different types of defibrillators:

  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED)—Can be used by untrained bystanders in emergencies
  • Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)—Surgically implanted inside a patient’s body to treat potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias
  • Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD)—Portable devices that rests outside a patient’s body
