Background and Identification
The Datex-Ohmeda TuffSat is a handheld, portable pulse oximeter made by GE’s Datex-Ohmeda division. GE Healthcare acquired Instrumentarium’s Datex-Ohmeda division in 2003. The division produces anesthesia, respiratory, and monitoring equipment. The Datex Ohmeda brand is still branded on select GE equipment. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation.
The Datex-Ohmeda TuffSat is designed as one of the smallest handheld pulse oximeters. It is meant to spot-check arterial oxygen saturation levels and pulse rate. This model can be used in respiratory care, subcritical care, home care, prehospital/EMS, rehabilitation, and physician’s office environments. The TuffSat device uses the TruTrak data sampling system to calculate the saturated oxygen level several times per second for more reliable readings.
The TuffSat pulse oximeter includes a large, backlit LCD (liquid crystal display) screen. GE Healthcare advertises that the backlight allows the monitor’s readings to be seen up to 0.6 meters away in a dark room. It features a rubber grip for easier handling. It also includes a neoprene carrying case with a belt clip. The device requires four 1.5 Volt alkaline AA batteries. Its body is mainly yellow with black details.
The TuffSat pulse oximeter was discontinued by GE Healthcare in 2016.
