Background and Information

The Datex-Ohmeda Aestiva 5 is a flexible and accessible anesthesia delivery system manufactured by General-Electric. The Aestiva offers three models. The 2 vaporizer trolley model is able to hold 2 vaporizers and 2 or 3 gases. The 3 vaporizer trolley model holds 3 vaporizers and 2, 3, or 4 gases. The pendant model is able to hold 2 vaporizers and 2 or 3 gases. The Aestiva 5 features an easy-to-use SmartVent ventilator with the capability of offering various pressure and volume modes for neonates, trauma, and compromised patients.

Refurbished models are available from a number of online medical resellers. The Aestiva 7100 retails between $7000 to $10,000 USD. The Aestiva 7900 uses a different ventilator system (7900) and retails between $10,000 to $14,000 USD. The GE Datex-Ohmedia S/5 Aespire is known to be the successor of the Aestiva 5. The Aespire model features its new AdvancedBreathing system and integrates fewer parts and connections to reduce the risk of leaks and misconnections.

In 2019, Health Canada reported a recall with certain Aestiva and Aespire Anesthesia Systems in regards to having a theoretical vulnerability to a cyber-attack when connected to the hospital network. Due to a vulnerable network system, attackers were capable of penetrating the hospital network and sending false sensor parameters. In 2012, the U.S FDA reported a recall with the Aestiva 7900 due to the interlock slide mechanism missing from the 3-vaporizer manifold of the device. In 2007, the International Anesthesia Research Society reported a UK case of a gas leak in the Aestiva 5 anesthesia system due to a broken inspiratory flow sensor. As mentioned beforehand, the improved Aespire model addresses some of the recalled issues with the Aestiva 5 anesthesia system.

There are different variations of the Aestiva 5 anesthesia system. Below is an illustration with varying configurations of the machine.
