Background and Identification

A colposcope is a surgical instrument that allows your OB/GYN to see the cervix more clearly. It is a large, electric microscope with a bright light. It allows the doctor to perform a colposcopy. According to Mayo Clinic, “Colposcopy (kol-POS-kuh-pee) is a procedure to closely examine your cervix, vagina and vulva for signs of disease.”

A colposcopy might be performed if a pap smear comes back abnormal or it could be used to diagnose cancer, cervicitis or genital warts.

The colposcope can be used to help the doctor do a biopsy of the cervix or any abnormal area they see.
