Background and Identification
The Collins Eaglet is a handheld spirometer that performs pulmonary function tests. Devices like the Collins Eaglet are commonly used by pulmonologists to determine the lung quality of patients experiencing respiratory complications. This device was mass-produced c. 2003 when Collins Medical, Inc. was a subsidiary of Ferraris CardioRespiratory. Collins Medical, Inc. was eventually acquired by the now defunct nSpire Health Inc., which reorganized as KoKo PFT in May 2020. The Collins Eaglet was primarily marketed in the United States and the United Kingdom, and there are no known past or active recalls on this device. The device is compatible with the Collins PLUS/2000 software package, which is also used by other Collins respiratory analyzers such as the CPL, GEM, Eagle, and Hawk. The primary component of the Collins Eaglet that tends to require replacement and/or recalibration is the pneumotach; the instruction manual also states rubber components of this device will break down quickly with continued use. The KoKo SX 1000 spirometer is the primary pulmonary diagnostic spirometer currently promoted by KoKo PFT.
The Eaglet itself consists of a DC-2 filter and mouthpiece, a pneumotach, and a plastic handle. The full Eaglet setup includes the spirometer, a USB cable, a computer and its monitor, and a printer. The pneumotach and handle combined measure at 7” L x 3¾” W x 2” D and weigh about half a pound. The device serial number is printed on the outside of its box; the location of the serial number on the device itself is not included in the instruction manual. This device is only available in a grey colorway. This device lacks any major distinguishing features but likely exhibits subdued Collins Medical, Inc. branding.
