Background and Identification
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machines temporarily take over the functions of the heart and lungs while a patient is under surgery. The CPB pump is typically referred to as a heart-lung machine and helps circulate and oxygenate blood while bypassing the heart and lungs. CPB pumps are commonly used for procedures involving the heart, and typically consist of the following components: tubing, pumps (centrifugal and roller), oxygenator, heat exchanger, cannulae, and cardioplegia.
