Being an optical mouse, this device utilizes a light source (an LED) and a light detector to detect motion in relation to a surface. Optical mice don’t have any internal moving components and use a solid-state system. This allows the mouse to detect how it is being moved in the physical world and translate this to movement of the cursor on the PC’s display. Prior to optical mice, mechanical mice employed similar LED technology while also using mechanical components instead of just solid-state functionality.
