Background

The Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven series of toaster ovens has seen numerous incremental improvements over the years. One major change in this model from other toaster ovens from Black & Decker includes the addition of a broiling feature. With this new feature, users can make a single serving cup of French Onion soup with perfectly melted cheese on top, the way it’s supposed to be.

This model, the TRO405, has been superseded by later, more modern models by Black and Decker. However, the TRO405 can still be found in kitchens, dorm rooms, and thrift shops where electronics are sold.

Identification

This particular model can be identified by these features:

  • Grey front panel with grey control knobs and lever on the right-hand side.
  • Silver-colored metal top and back, with white plastic side panels
  • Clear glass door with spring-loaded return

Specifications

Power consumption on Broil mode: 775 Watts

Power consumption on Toast mode: 1380 Watts

However, the specifications stamped on the bottom of the model indicate that power usage can reach 1500 Watts.

There are four identical heating elements. The two in the top area are spaced 3.75” apart, with one in front and one toward the back. The two heating elements at the bottom are stacked on top of each other and centered in the middle of the interior space. At the time of disassembly, our team’s multimeters were unable to take an accurate reading of the resistance of the heating elements, as readings fluctuated wildly.

Overall dimensions:

Hight: 7.5”; Length: 15”; Depth: 8”

Toaster should be plugged into wall power delivering 120 Volts, 50-60 Hz AC voltage.

Additional Information

Interesting to know: This toaster oven utilizes 100% analog mechanisms to function. Beyond the heating elements, the only other electronic components are two 30k Ohm resistors, an small red incandescent light, and a solenoid. The mechanical components that allow the knobs and “toast” lever to control the heat and timing aspects of the device are cleverly designed to interact with each other without any digital assistance.
