Background and Identification

The Bird 8400ST/8400STi is a respiratory ventilator intended for adult patients suffering from respiratory distress or failure. It was released in 1990 for hospital use. It was produced by Percussionaire, a medical device and ventilator company established by Dr. Forrest Bird. His inventions predating the Bird 8400ST/STi played a critical role in allowing polio patients to live without iron lungs during the height of the epidemic.

Though the Bird 8400ST/STi fell out of mainstream use in the early 2000s, it is succeeded by several ventilators and respiratory devices that build and improve upon the technology of the Bird 8400ST/STi, such as the Phasitron and the Travel Air home care device.

The Bird 8400ST/STi can be recognized by the red light display and red and white color scheme. The model number can be found on the front panel beside the alarm indicators.
