Background and Identification

Released on April 7th, 2009, the Xserve 2009 is an Intel based server rack unit developed by Apple, Inc. The Xserve 2009 uses an Intel Xeon processor, DDR3 memory, and NVIDIA graphics with Mini DisplayPort output. Part of the Xserve line, the Xserve 2009 is more formally known as the Xserve Xeon Nahalem. The Xserve has been produced by Apple since 2002, but there are different versions with various iterations. The Xserve 2009 is an updated version of the Intel Xserve announced in 2006. This update included an increase to the maximum storage capacity—6TB when used with three 2 TB drives. There is also the addition of a SSD boot-drive that allows all drives to be swapped while the server is still online.

The Xserve 2009 is Apple’s first Xserve to use PVC-free internal components and be free of poly-brominated flame retardants. The Xserve was later updated to ship with Mac OS X Server 10.6 from August 28th, 2009. Apple announced on November 5th, 2010, that it will no longer be developing newer versions of the Xserve and suggested that users switch over to the Mac Pro Server or Mac Mini Server.
