Background and Identification
The fourth-generation Time Capsule Model A1409 is a thin white plastic device that functions as a wireless router and network-attached storage device (NAS). The Time Capsule is capable of running a Wi-Fi network and storing Time Machine backups or files on its internal hard drive. The router includes four gigabit ethernet ports for wired networking and a USB port that you can use with an external hard drive or shared printer. You can use Apple’s Airport Utility software for Mac or Windows to manage your network or erase a hard drive.
The Model A1409, released by Apple on June 21, 2011, featured larger hard drives than the third-generation at the same price point; the 2 TB model sold for $299, and the 3 TB model went for $499. Apple also increased the range of the A1409’s wireless signal by upgrading the Wi-Fi card from a Marvell chip to the Broadcom chip used in many Macs of the same era.
You can identify the Time Capsule Model A1409 by the model number on the rubber bottom of the device (the serial number is there as well). The model number is written in small print on the first line below the Apple logo. Physically, the Time Capsule Model A1409 is short and wide; only the fifth-generation Model A1470 is tall and skinny.
