Wood Giant (5e Race)

Wood Giants

Physical Description

A Wood Giant and a young Treant by Anna Christenson

Wood giants stand around 14 feet tall and weigh around 1,200 pounds, an impressive presence to see. They are humanoid in body shape and have a combination of svelte and powerful features, like that of elves and firbolg. Their eyes are usually green and their brows stick out like branches of a tree, occasionally bifurcating. They are vegetarians by choice, resorting to eating meat only when no other option is available. As such, their bodies are usually very low in fat. Due to a lifestyle of rigor, they maintain good muscle weight. Their hair is usually the colors of different wood, though some have even hair the color of tree sap instead.

History

Wood giants are the dwellers of rare millennium forests, which are the only areas with trees large enough to conceal them comfortably. Unlike typical giants, they do not seek the shelter of caves of stone, preferring to sleep instead within the bounds of arboreal nature, on beds of moss under the cover of canopies. They are caretakers of these massive groves, which are sometimes the targets of logging efforts. As guardians of nature, they are often befriended by druids and eschew the affairs which lie beyond their neck of the woods. They are famously known to reside in the High Forest, where they live as gatekeepers into the elven cities that lie under the oversized foliage. There, they and the elves commit to maintaining a good relationship with nature and coexist symbiotically. Sometimes when a wood giant passes on, it is said their bodies will become of wood, while others say they become a giant tree to shelter others.

Society

Wood giants are the wardens of the deepest, wildest portions of the world’s forests. Unlike many of their kin, wood giants are slow to anger, peaceful, and artistic, and display an infinite patience in their duty. A wood giant’s role is to preserve and protect the wilderness—a role they believe that nature itself granted them, the proof of which manifests in their magical abilities tied to the natural world. Wood giant culture is as complex as their forest homes. Much of a tribe’s time is spent tending to a forest’s health: planting new trees, clearing away dead brush, and hunting abominations that pervert the natural order. Individuals may even cultivate their forest homes into elaborate demesnes, mazes, or living temples. They are an isolated race, only rarely meeting to trade with other tribes or the occasional elven settlement. While primarily good-natured, wood giants are distrustful of outsiders and prone to great melancholies.

Standing tall and graceful, they are guardians of the select giant forests
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom and Constitution scores each increase by 1.
Age. Wood giants live for quite a long time, maturing around 30 years of age, but living up to nearly seven centuries. They remain relatively healthy and youthful for quite a long time, usually dying of other causes before age starts to wear on them.
Alignment. Most Wood giants are in any variation of chaotic alignment. They usually do not go too far into evil or good, remaining a fairly neutral race.
Size. Wood Giants are well above the height of the smaller non-giant races, but not as grand as their elemental cousins. They still stand at a whopping 14 feet on average. Your size is Large.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Fey Kinship. You share some elven blood and association with the little people. Your creature type is considered both fey and giant. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.
Huge Physique. Your sheer size grants you a great boost in power. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift. However, you require twice as much food and water per day as a normal creature your size.
Language of the Wilds. As a guardian of the forest, you understand and manipulate some of its phenomena. You know the druidcraft cantrip.
Stare Down. You are familiar with how people squirm under your gaze from your size, revealing their inner thoughts. Whenever you make a Wisdom (Insight) check against a creature of a size category smaller than your own, you are considered proficient in the Insight skill. If you are already proficient you may add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus.
Forest Dweller. You know how to move with grace through the area you know so well. You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks when in forest environments.

gollark: If people care about art as a status signal or art for some philosophical reason they might want it to be human-made.
gollark: It does seem plausible that AI art might kill off much of commissioned art/graphic design.
gollark: We can assume that the AI runs faster than humans because people will only run training for a few months at most before they get bored and stop.
gollark: Legal action was maybe also bad.
gollark: I do think the DALL-E Mini name was kind of bad.
