Wingle (3.5e Race)
Wingle
“ | The wind blows over the fields and fen, fresh, sweet, and wild; it worries not if it should return again, or if it should turn vile. | ” |
Wingles trace their origins back to a tribe of fourteen ancestors(see Religion below); either the thirteen who remained on the ground, or Maegwyn, who severed The Cloudland from the continent with Valknyr(a powerful magic spear). The Wingles residing on The Cloudland scarcely visited below, though they were well received by their brethren and held in awe by others- then, after the matriarch Ha's death, Maegwyn was looked up to as the leader of the Wingles on The Cloudland, as well as below. Thus, the beginning of the royal Wingle house was established.
Maegwyn herself outlived all her siblings, and even some of her children. And so, the powerful weapons and items crafted for her brothers and sisters became subject to much debate. Many of them had simply been inherited; but by then Wingles had learned the ways of war from their neighbors, and a bitter civil war was fought to gain possession of Halla and Syuveil, two powerful magical swords(the latter even moreso) belonging to Dib and Hal's descendants. At the climax Hal himself returned from the Celestial Plane to retrieve Syuveil, and Maegwyn's husband Urkel took up Valknyr and thoroughly routed the forces in contention for Halla before hiding Halla at a still undiscovered location. These things further reinforced and defined Maegwyn's rule, though they grieved her greatly: she wept for three days and nights at a well she had been constructing, before simply passing to the Celestial Plane in her sleep a few days later.
Five generations later, only a single pure-blooded Wingle couple of the Elder's lineage remained. Their daughter was known to be brash(even by Wingle standards) and beautiful, and heedless of her ancestor's diminishing fortune. A cunning young noble named Gildas sought to take her place in the succession- but not through marriage. However, the daughter escaped her assassination and jumped over The Cloudland's edge while in possession of Valknyr. Gildas very publicly had the assassin brought to justice, and put a Geas upon him to protect the Well of Tears- the place at which Maegwyn cried at the end of the civil war. One of his midnight black wings was amputated, and though advanced in age he remains able-bodied and in the Well's vicinity to this day. Popular opinion among Wingles suspects the daughter still lives, traveling the land below in her father's red riding cloak, but this has not been officially confirmed- those who claim to have irrefutable proof often vanish mysteriously.
Personality
Wingles tend to go about their day with enthusiasm, whether they have active professions or not. They tend to act haughty towards new acquaintances and strangers, but with time this lessens to a teasing familiarity. Their quick minds are prone to brief flashes of humor and non-sequitors. In a neutral mood, a Wingle's focus improves slightly, but perhaps not for long as they will most likely become bored. In negative moods Wingles are supremely capricious and vindictive.
Physical Description
Wingles tend to have lean, more athletic builds with a small frame. They are light, owing to their bones being hollow. They have pale complexions and blue or green eyes, and any color of hair- although they are most well known to be blondes. In general their faces are heart-shaped and fine boned. Male Wingles can grow facial hair, but it is ancient custom not to grow it out until reaching old age.
Their wings grow from the back and are at a span of around 11 feet, and can be a wide range of colors, anywhere from blacks, grey and brown, to the primary colors and white. Pure white and pure black wings are rarely seen, and even rarer are gold flecks that appear on the wings with age.
Relations
Wingles get along very well with High Elves, almost as well with Humans and Wood Elves, and curiously enough have formed a strange friendship with the Giants. They are in general friendly towards Halflings. But they are rivals(mostly friendly) with the Dwarves, in particular Mountain Dwarves. They have a great dislike of Pixies.
Alignment
Are most famously known for being Chaotic Good, but there have been examples of Wingles of other alignments.
Lands
When not on The Cloudland, Wingles favor urban environments; outdoors they are fond of meadows and hilly terrain, and they love mountains and high vantage points, and especially love visiting islands although they rarely settle there.
Religion
The Wingles venerate one or many of 15 ancestors of theirs whom they believe ascended to the Celestial Plane in very ancient times: Ha, Hal, Elle, Karr, Galen, Sorah, Lissa, Ewa, Dib, Sheya, Jaleel, Maegwyn, Laul, Albin, and Sky. They are known as the Elders or Old Ones among Wingles.
Specifically, Elle and Lissa are associated with plants and animals; Albin and Sheya with secrets; Sorah & Laul with the ocean and sailing, and respectively weather and fire; Galen with trickery and thieves; Dib with light; Karr with the forge; Sheya & Albin with secrets; Ha with creation; Hal with death; Ewa with music; Jaleel with magic, Sky with dancing, and Maegwyn with prophecy.

They speak Common, in addition to their natural language of Winglish.
