In the Lirian Empire, crimes are almost always dealt with by a constable and his men if the crime concerns a city or keep, and bounty hunters on commission if it is a rural affair of sufficient significance. But once in a very long while a crime is deemed important enough to send out a Winged Protector. There are very few crimes where the services of the Protector are required, and both times it has been used has been over money and resources. Specifically, the Protector is used for thefts of enormous significance, typically in the hundreds of thousands of gold pieces range. Only such vast resources as can tip the balance of power on the scale of nations interest the Protectors. Winged Protectors take the form of a humanoid some 16 feet tall made of metal and with giant metallic wings protruding from their back (the wings lift the Protector up magically, but cannot be dispelled any more than the constructs normal movement.) They are powered by a trapped air elemental. Winged Protectors speak and understand Common and Undercommon.
Combat
Winged Protectors are unlike most constructs in that they are intelligent and some have said that they may even be self aware. As such, they are capable of conceiving of subtlety, though their abilities lend themselves more readily to fairly straightforward tactics. They are usually required to bring the perpetrators back to the courts alive, so they have several abilities to this effect. Winged Protectors do not sneak up on their charges. They first call attention to themselves, announce the charges against them, and ask for surrender. If this is accepted, then they retrieve masterwork manacles from behind their wings, restrain the suspects, and wait for an airship to pick them up. If the suspects do not surrender, then they attack. They usually charge into battle using their “Hold Person” ability immediately against the most heavily armored foe. They quickly disable the affected enemy with their Death’s Door ability, and move on to the next most hevily armored foe. They typically save spell casters for last, but if a caster becomes inconvint enough to warrant their attention, then they will typically use their Bring ‘em Back Alive ability to disable them.
Immunity to Magic (Ex): A Winged Protector is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. Winged Protectors are immune to rust effects.
Non-lethal Force (Ex): A Winged Protector can deal non-lethal damage with its slam attacks without taking a -4 penalty.
Bring ’em Back Alive (Ex): At the Winged Protector’s option, any melee attack that would reduce a foe to –2 or fewer hit points reduces the foe to –1 hit points instead. A Winged Protector must choose to use this ability immediately upon reducing its foe to –2 or fewer hit points, and before making any other action (or even continuing its full attack).
Death’s Door (Ex): When a foe is helpless (typically because of the Winged Protector’s Hold Person ability) the Winged Protector can spend a standard action to attack the target, bringing the target to exactly -9 hit points.
Hold Person(Sp): Three times per day a Winged Protector can cast Hold Person as a 20th level caster. The save DC is 32.
Honesty(Su): Everyone within 20’ of the Winged Protector must make a Will save (DC 32) or be unable to tell lies within the area. It otherwise acts as the ‘’Zone of Truth’’ spell. Construction
