Way of the Storm, Variant (5e Subclass)

The Stormsoul monk studies storms and turbulent skies for parallels between the heavens and the true self. By meditating on the power of actions negative and positive, they learn to channel the balancing force of lightning through their limbs. Because Stormsoul monks believe in the achievement of balance through equal imbalance, they cannot walk the unfocused path of neutrality.

Notice

Stormsoul Monks

This archetype is very loosely based off Way of the Sun Soul, as found in Xanathar's Guide To Everything.

Fulminic Blows

Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you can charge your unarmed strikes with electricity, drawn from natural imbalances of the soul.

One attack you make per turn gains an extra die of lightning damage equal to your unarmed damage die. This becomes 2 attacks at ninth level and three attacks at 16th level.

Galvanic Arc

At 6th level, you gain the ability to channel your ki into a crackling arc of electrical energy.

Immediately after you take the Attack action on your turn, you can spend 2 ki points to cast the burning hands spell as a bonus action. You can spend additional ki points to cast burning hands as a higher-level spell. Each additional ki point you spend increases the spell’s level by 1. When cast this way, burning hands deals lightning damage.

The maximum number of ki points (2 plus any additional points) that you can spend on the spell equals half your monk level.

Gnostic Capacitor

At 11th level, you gain the ability to polarize ki and store it in the folds of your consciousness as untapped electrical energy.

This requires a full turn of concentration, during which you can spend a number of ki points equal to your monk level/4 rounded down, and may not take any other actions. For each ki point spent, add two dice of a level equal to your monk unarmed damage to a pool of dice you can draw from when performing an attack. When using these dice, you must declare the number being used before the attack roll, and roll them as lightning damage on a successful attack; missing causes the energy to dissipate harmlessly.

You cannot use more dice in a single attack than the number of ki points spent to determine the dice pool. The activation of this ability can only be done once per rest and only while the dice pool is empty. Energy stored in the monk's soul naturally settles back into a less polarized state after 30 minutes of disuse, and any unused energy is effectively wasted. On a short rest after the use of this ability, subtract the number of dice taken from this pool for use in attacks from available hit dice you possess for the purposes of healing.

Eidolon of The Storm

At 17th level, you learn to achieve perfect balance of form, solidifying soul with body, and infusing body with soul.

Blue-white plasma wreaths your form, shedding bright light in a thirty foot radius, and dim light in a radius 30 feet beyond that. You may leave and enter this state as a bonus action, but must expend 1 ki point for every 3 minutes spent in this form.

While in this form, your movement becomes 0. You can take a move action to target a square 100 feet plus your dexterity modifier times 5 from you, and arc to it as a bolt of lightning. Units between you and the square take 1d10 + your wisdom modifier lightning damage. If you have any dice stored from gnostic capacitor, you may distribute them across the effected targets, with the same restrictions as an attack using those dice.
