Way of the Shield (5e Subclass)

Monks of the Shield train for years using their shield to both repel attacks and use them offensively against their foes. A Shield Monk disciplines themselves in the use of the shield and as an extension of themselves.


Path of the Shield

At level 3, you gain proficiency in using a shield, your shield is considered a finesse weapon and your shield may be used with Unarmored Defense and other monk abilities, without penalty as long as your other hand remains free. Your shield may have a flat or dull edge or it can be made with a sharpened edge or blades/ spikes along the circumference which could change the damage type from bludgeoning, slashing or piercing. Your shield deals 1d6 damage plus your proficiency bonus and you gain +1 AC while holding your shield as long as your other hand remains free. You also gain the 'Protection' Combat Style from the Fighter Class.

Ki Advantage

At level 6, you can spend 1 Ki to impose a disadvantage on an attack on you. This can only be used once per combat round and cannot be used when the PC is surprised.

One with the Shield

At level 6, you gain the following features while your shield is equipped and your other hand remains free:

  • Attacks made with your shield are considered magical for purposes of overcoming resistance and immunity.
  • You now roll a d8 for damage for your shield.

Ki Deflect

At level 11, you can spend 2 Ki as a reaction to increase your AC by +4 against an attack, ranged or melee. This can only be used once per combat round and cannot be used when the PC is surprised.

One with the Shield

At level 11, you gain the following features while your shield is equipped and your other hand remains free:

  • You now roll a d10 for damage for your sheild
  • Your shield now grants you an additional +2 AC

Shield of Light

At level 17, you can spend 2 Ki as an action to shine a extremely bright light from your shield in a 30 foot line (bright for an additional 30 feet and dim another 30 after that) to impose a one round disadvantage on a target creature/ creatures. Shield of Light also deals radiant damage to any creatures in the 30 foot line. The radiant damage equals 5 + your Wisdom modifier. The light created lasts for one round and this ability can only be used once per round of combat.

gollark: Nope! Many languages, abstractly speaking, *don't* have limited memory. Their implementations might, though.
gollark: No, Turing completeness means it can simulate any Turing machine. It *can't* do that if it has limited memory.
gollark: I don't know exactly what its instruction set is like. But if it has finite-sized addresses, it can probably access finite amounts of memory, and thus is not Turing-complete.
