Way of the Psion (5e Subclass)

Monk Subclass: Way of the Psion

When you reach 3rd level, you commit yourself to a monastic tradition: the Way of the Psion. Your tradition grants you features at 3rd level and again at 6th, 11th, and 17th level. When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you learn mental disciplines that harness the power of the mind. A discipline requires you to spend ki points each time you use it.

You follow a monastic tradition that teaches you to harness the power of the mind. When you focus your ki, you can align your wisdom to open the doors of the mind, using them as gateways to extend the abilities of your body. Some members of this tradition dedicate themselves to a single mystic order of discipline, but others weave together disciplines from multiple orders to further diversify and enhance their monastic abilities. These monks become adept at using their mind to influence the body, control others thoughts and emotions, or even manipulate space, time, and the physical world around them.

Many monks of this tradition develop social quirks and eccentric minds. In order to maintain the strict discipline and intense self-knowledge needed to tap into their power, psions develop a variety of practices to keep their focus sharp. These practices are reflected in taboos and quirks, strange little behaviors that govern a mystic’s actions. These quirks are behavioral tics that help keep mystics in the proper frame of mind while maintaining perfect control over their minds and bodies. While these taboos are harmless, they cast psions as outsiders. Few feel accepted by society, and fewer still care to become integrated with it. To psions, the life of the mind is where they feel most at home.-->

Psionics

You gain the ability to perform psionic talents and disciplines.

  • Talents. At 3rd level, your mind awakens to the ability to communicate via telepathy. You can telepathically speak to any creature you can see within 120 feet of you in this manner. You don’t need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic messages, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language or be telepathic itself. You also learn the Mystic Hand Talent. You learn an additional talent at 7th and 16th level.
  • Disciplines. A psionic discipline is a rigid set of mental exercises that allows a Psion to manifest a psionic power. You choose two disciplines from any one order from the Psionic Disciplines list. You may choose an additional discipline from any order at 6st, 11th, and 17th level.
  • Psi Points.

Starting at 3rd level, you are able to convert Ki points to Psi points which can be spent to execute a psionic discipline. Each Ki point converts to 2 Psi Points, and the maximum Psi Points you may gain at any one time from this ability is twice your monk level, even if you take a short rest to regain ki you may not exceed this Psi Point maximum. Any Psi points not spent are lost after a long rest.

  • Psi Limit.

Though you have access to a potent amount of psionic energy, it takes training and practice to channel that energy. There is a limit on the number of psi points you can spend to activate a psionic discipline. The limit is based on your mystic level, as shown in the Psi Limit column of the Psionics table. For example, as a 3rd-level monk, you can spend no more than 2 psi points on a discipline each time you use it, no matter how many psi points you have. Once you reach 5th level in this class, you can increase the number of psi points spent on the discipline to achieve different or more potent effects. The maximum number of psi points you can spend to cast a spell in this way is determined by your monk level. At 5th level, you may spend up to 3 psi points; this increases to 5 psi points at 9th level, 6 at 13th level, and 7 at 17th level. Each psionic discipline describes effects that you can create with it by spending a certain number of psi points. A psionic talent requires no psi points.

  • Psychic Focus.

You can focus psionic energy on one of your psionic disciplines to draw ongoing benefits from it. As a bonus action, you can choose one of your psionic disciplines and gain its psychic focus benefit, which is detailed in that discipline’s description. The benefit lasts until you are incapacitated or until you use another bonus action to choose a different focus benefit.

You can have only one psychic focus benefit at a time, and using the psychic focus of one discipline doesn’t limit your ability to use other disciplines.
  • Psionic Ability. Wisdom Your Ki fuels your psionic abilities. Wisdom is your psionic ability for your psionic disciplines. You use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a psionic discipline or when making an attack roll with one.
Discipline save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
Discipline attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

All parts of this Subclass are a variant of the Way of Four Elements and use the Mystic abilities from UA.
