Way of the Dissipating Palm

Monks of the Way of the Dissipating Palm are specialists in the disruption of arcane magic. They channel their Ki through a variety of symbolic and ritual gestures (Mudras) to counter spells and spellcasting.

Disciple of the 36 Mudras

When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you develop Discordant Meridians and learn the Mudra of Contemplation, the Mudra of Touching, and choose one other mudra. The mudra are detailed in the section below. You learn one additional mudra of your choice at 6th, 11th and 17th level. Whenever you learn a new mudra, you can also replace one optional mudra that you already know with a different mudra.

Discordant Meridians

As a side effect of your training you cannot attune to magical items, but you are immune to cursed magical items.

Mudra of Contemplation

Your meditations and breathing practices give you a intuitive understanding of the arcane. You gain proficiency in Arcana if you don’t already have it and your proficiency bonus is doubled.

Mudra of Touching

The gestures of the monk allow him to sense magical auras. The monk can expend 2 Ki Points to detect magic as an action. The monk can also detect magic as a Ritual (Meditation) for no Ki point cost.

Optional Mudra

Mudra of Attuning

Any spell that requires you to make saving throw you may opt to make it as a dexterity saving throw or wisdom saving throw instead, at a cost of 1 Ki Point. By spending 2 Ki points you may opt to make the saving throw as a dexterity save and add your wisdom modifier. The Ki points are expended before any dice are rolled.

Mudra of Interception

You have learnt the ability to disrupt a spellcasting creature’s concentration. You can expend 1 Ki point and make an unarmed melee attack, if the attack is successful the attack does no damage, but immediately ends a spellcasting creature’s concentration.

Mudra of Crowding

You have learnt the secrets of disrupting spellcasting. As an action you can expend 1 Ki Point to prevent a nominated creature from spellcasting until beginning of your next turn. You must be within 5’ of the spellcasting creature at all times and must be able to see and touch them. The targeted spellcaster cannot use the disengage action and you have advantage on attacks of opportunity against the spellcaster. You may only use the Mudra of Crowding on one creature at a time.

Mudra of Cessation (6th level Required)

The monk can dispel magic as a reaction by spending 4 Ki points. The Monk must be within 15’ of the caster, in the area of effect; or within 15’ of the target creature or object.

Any spell of 3rd level or lower is dispelled. For each spell of 4th level or higher on the target, make an ability check using your Ki ability (proficiency bonus plus the wisdom modifier). The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a successful check, the spell is dispelled.

You may automatically dispel a spell by spending Ki points equal to 1 Ki point + the level of the spell. E.g. 8 Ki points to dispel a 7th level spell.

Mudra of Reflecting (6th level Required)

You can use this mudra to change the target of a spell. The monk can attempt to redirect a spell as a reaction by spending 4 Ki points. The monk determines the target of the spell (as per casting rules) and the spell has a range as if the monk had cast it, but otherwise the spell obeys the same casting rules. The Monk must be within 15’ of the caster, in the area of effect or within 15’ of the target object or creature to redirect the spell.

Any spell of 3rd level or lower is redirected. For each spell of 4th level or higher on the target, make an ability check using your Ki ability (Proficiency bonus plus the wisdom modifier). The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a successful check, the spell is redirected.

You may automatically redirect a spell by spending Ki points equal to 1 Ki point + the level of the spell. E.g. 8 Ki points to redirect a 7th level spell.

Mudra of Disruption (6th level Required)

If you are within 5’ of a creature you can detect if it is attuned to any magical items. As an unarmed attack you can disrupt the target creatures’ attunement to one magical item for a number of turns equal to your monk level. If the creature is attuned to more than one magical item you choose which attunement to disrupt and the attack does no damage.

Mudra of Rebuke (11th level Required)

When you are targeted by a spell by spending 2 Ki points, as a reaction you can send a surge of Ki back at the spellcaster. The spellcaster takes 3d6 + your wisdom modifier of force damage.

Mudra of Protection (11th level Required)

By spending 5 Ki points you become resistant to magical damage of the following types: acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, necrotic, radiant, and thunder. The protection lasts for 5 rounds plus your wisdom modifier.

Mudra of Nullifying (17th level Required)

You can spend 9 Ki points to create an Antimagic field as per the spell.
