Viridan Draconians

Personality

The viridan race is widely prised for insight, understanding, and skillful manipulation of other people, both enemies and allies. They are the tacticians, mediators, and emissaries of the chromatic draconians, with diplomatic instincts unrivalled among their typically antisocial brethren. They can schmooze with elven politicians, dwarven army officers, Solamnic curmudgeons, and kender freewheelers with grace and courtesy, and even those repulsed by their reptilian visage may soon enough be genuinely impressed by their ready grasp of the balance of power or deployment of forces, and their transparent sincerity in wanting to help.

Physical Description

Viridan Draconians are wingless, average-sized, and lizardlike. They do have dragon snouts, fangs, tails, and horns, and a series of finlike ridges down their spines. Their skin is of hunter green scales, and their eyes are metallic gold, while their fingers and toes are tipped in dragon claws. Females do not have breasts, any more than a female dragon would, and no draconian has hair, eyelashes, nipples, or a belly button. Draconians do have lips, which are flexible enough to approximate humanoid speech. Some say viridan look a bit like Godzilla, but mostly these are not native denizens of Krynn, as no local theaters put on traditional japanese kaiju productions.

Relations

Elves: "Marvelous folks. I love what you've done with this garden. And the land around it? Delightful. I'm counting my blessings as we speak that you were here to protect these woodlands through the long centuries before I had a chance to see them for myself. You will let me help keep them safe, I hope? I'm sure I can think of some way to assist. We all know how trying these wars can be, but it's what I'm made for. I'll do my best."

Humans: "Now, please don't be put off by my appearance. I know you have had difficulties with draconians in the past, but I assure you, I am not like the metallic ones. See my scales? See how I walk openly among you, not wrapped up in bandages like the baaz did? A new kind of draconian is here, and we want to be your friends. When the war comes to your doorstep, you'll be glad to have me. Just give me a chance."

Ogres: "Clumsy planning, poor improvisation. Not very perspicacious. My team is already three steps ahead of you."

Dwarves: "This fortress of yours has a very well-designed layout. Who planned these blueprints? This is good, I can definitely work with this. I've taken some time to find out what we'll be up against, and with this as our home turf advantage, I'm confident I can brief your valorous, stalwart warriors on a battle plan that will see you through with hardly any casualties. It will be good to see such fine upstanding clans stay strong and numerous."

Gnomes: "Do you have a king I could speak with? A general? Mayor? Representative? Emissary? Delegate? Ambassador? Anything? How do you people ever get anything organized? Wow, you really need me, don't you?"

Kender: "Pleased to meet you, too. Are you in charge here? The mayor? Where is he? ....I see. Well, tell you what, why don't we call a town meeting, to talk about the invading dragon army? I thought you'd like that idea. Yes, I like talking about dragons, too. As it so happens, I'm quite closely related to them myself. You could tell? Well, I don't like to brag, but since you ask so nicely, I'll tell you all about it. Now hurry and get your friends."

Goblins: "More clever and cautious than ogres, you may even be more of a threat. I know better than to let size fool me. But I know your weaknesses, too. You are nothing my careful planning can't outmatch."

Minotaurs: "Okay, we're dealing with some heavyweights, here. No weaknesses in physical force, magical force, or emotional force. Can we turn them against each other? Unlikely, strong racial loyalty in a mixed race battle. Do we have any kender? Let's send some nigel out to lay in traps, and then let the kender whip them into a blind rage. Weakness in good judgment may just be the key to victory."

Metallic Dragons: "Am I doing okay? I know you're depending on me, more than the others. I'm really trying to pull them together and get us all through this, together."

Chromatic Dragons: "So, this is it. The big test. My army is ready. My plan is sound. I think. I hope. Gods, I hope it's good enough. Ready or not, dragon, here we come."

Baaz Draconians: "Shock troops, numerous, but individually unthreatening. Incapable of flight or gliding. Utilize terrain to slow their approach, and engage the real threats first, then we'll take care of you during mop-up."

Kapak Draconians: "Stealth troops, keep someone detecting magic for these at all times during the critical phase of battle. Your venom may be slow to act, but the battle might well last long enough to distract me from being able to heal it in time. A death within the ranks of our healthy soldiers could set off a disastrous chain reaction, and I think that's probably your plan. We can prevent it."

Bozak Draconians: "Magic, strength at arms, and wings. No question that you're the keystone of the enemy forces. Not as thaumaturgically potent as the auraks, perhaps, but you are more numerous and more versatile. Your deaths are also more deadly to your own allies, though. Let's focus long-range attacks on you, first."

Sivak Draconians: "Strongest flight on the enemy side, but how much use will you make of that? You can't mimic the appearance of a deceased chromatic draconian, so if one of ours dies, we'll know you're infiltrating. That puts you at a disadvantage for your shapeshifter tricks. Will you realize that, and focus on your wing strength? I'm going to guess you will, and arrange to take the fight under some cover from the sky."

Aurak Draconians: "Heavy magic troops. Dreadnoughts of the enemy draconians. Their death throes consist first of fire, then of electricity. It would be best to arrange a one on one fight with you, preferably a reufel or cærel waiting in ambush. I'll see what kind of concealment our nigel can arrange for that."

Binel Draconians: "You are our strongest flyers. We will be relying on you to engage the sivaks, as needed. They are bigger and stronger than you, but I am confident you will be able to fulfill this task. We will also be depending on your aerial scouting to keep me informed of enemy troop deployments and conditions among our own forces, so that I can react tactically to the changing situation. This job is vital, and only you can do it."

Nigel Draconians: "You know what your abilities are better than anyone. If you have any spells you can think of a use for with this plan, tell me. I'll be relying heavily on your sorcerous expertise and ingenuity. You're already well aware of the spellcasters we're up against, and of just how badly we need you."

Reufel Draconians: "You are unquestionably our strongest soldiers, quite possibly even the strongest infantry anyone on the continent can field. I have outlined the areas of the front line where your might will be particularly essential. I know you're eager to get out there and kick some @$. I'll leave you to it. Remember, we're all counting on you."

Caerel Draconians: "I've briefed your troops, captain. Everyone knows what's expected of them. You may want to give them a bit of a pep talk, before the battle, since they're all following you. I know you feel like everything is riding on your shoulders, and I realize how hard that is. I feel that way, too. I've done my best to see to it they do you proud. Good luck out there."

Alignment

Almost invariably Neutral Good. New viridan should be assumed NG by default, unless and until sufficiently drastic life experience changes their outlook.

Lands

Viridan prefer forestland, especially temperate deciduous, but they also like rainforest and jungle country. Heavy canopy is good for wingless draconians, as it screens them from the eyes of their flying enemies.

Religion

As the alienated children of Takhisis's evil dragons, viridan draconians often feel no connection to either the good or the evil gods of Krynn. Even so, they are considerably more likely to develop a bond of faith over time, especially if they have a chance to work closely together with clerics in defense of their sacred grounds. A viridan might become a cleric of Paladine, Branchala, Majere, Habbakuk, or even Gilean or Zivilyn.

Language

Draconians naturally know how to speak the tongue of dragons, and they are taught Common by the wizards who created them. Depending on the race and background of that wizard, they may also teach their draconian some other language. This is largely irrelevant to the color of the draconian.

Names

A draconian might be named by its wizard creator, or it might choose its own name at a later time. Draconians do not know their dragon parents, and would fight to the death if they ever met.

Racial Traits

  • +4 Strength, +2 Constitution, +2 Charisma, +2 Intelligence: A draconian is a fearsome and majestic warrior, with the heritage of mystic and terrible dragons to draw upon. Its might is a force to be reckoned with, its scales are hardy and redoubtable, and its mind is swift and keen. However, draconians are monstrous to behold, and receive a -2 on all social skill checks (except Intimidate). This replaces their Charisma bonus for anyone who doesn't know the draconian personally, or anyone shallow enough to continue to judge by appearances.

gollark: It seems to be under active development so I assume they'll fix stuff eventually.
gollark: I decided to run dendrite, so technically I'm reachable on matrix.osmarks.net now? It's somewhat flaky because dendrite is quite experimental. Synapse would have used waaaay too much RAM.
gollark: Also, instead of consisting of multiple disconnected IRC networks, any servers can federate and participate in rooms together.
gollark: It's designed for more discord-style persistent chats, for one thing.
