Veteran (3.5e Class)
The Veteran
Veteran's are seasoned warriors and studied spellcasters. While most are generally of the older variety, some younger individuals just have that much experience to be classified as a Veteran. With enough time and effort, Veteran's can go in multiple directions, from a strong melee-combatant, to a powerful spell weaver, or even a combination of the two!
Making a Veteran
A Veteran has decent health, with a d8 as his hit dice, as well as fairly good class features that can make up for any shortcomings he might have. That being said, his real strength doesn't come out until after you've leveled into the class a few times.
Abilities: Every stat is important, depending on how you want to build your Veteran. The common thread among all possible builds, however, is a good Constitution.
Races: Anyone can become a Veteran, although this class is more common among Humans, Half-Elves and Half-Orcs.
Alignment: Veterans can fall under any alignment.
Starting Gold: 3d6×10 gp (105 gp).
Starting Age: As Wizard.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Veteran.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Veterans are proficient in all Simple and Martial Weapons, as well as Light and Medium Armors. Veterans are proficient in all shields, including the Tower Shield.
Bonus Feat: Starting at 2nd level, a Veteran gains a Bonus Feat every second level thereafter, so long as they meet the requirements for the feat in question.
Spells: A Veteran casts divine spells, which are drawn from the cleric spell list. A Veteran suffers no restrictions to what spells he can cast based on Chaotic-Lawful alignments, however Good-Evil spells are still restricted to their respective alignments; Neutral Veteran's can pull from either side of this blockade, however doing so can be quite polarizing to NPCs.
To prepare or cast a spell, a Veteran must have a Wisdom or Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level, chosen when the Veteran is being created. This choice cannot be changed once it has been made. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a Veteran’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the Veteran’s spell casting ability modifier.
Like other spellcasters, a Veteran can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Veteran. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high ability score.
Veterans meditate or ruminate for their spells. Each Veteran must choose a time at which he must spend 1 hour each day in quiet contemplation to regain his daily allotment of spells. Time spent resting has no effect on whether a Veteran can prepare spells. A Veteran may prepare and cast any spell on the cleric spell list, provided that he can cast spells of that level, but he must choose which spells to prepare during his daily meditation.
Veteran Intuition: Whenever a Veteran is asked for a Knowledge check of any kind, he may add his Veteran Levels to the check if the amount of ranks put into that skill is equal to his current Veteran Level. This bonus is not added to any other check.
Linguist: Whenever a Veteran encounters a language not listed in their known languages, they can make an Intelligence check, DC 15 + However many languages they know, to see if they do know the language they are attempting to understand. If the Veteran passes this check, add that language to their list of known languages permanently.
Veteran's Luck: Starting at 3rd level, if a Veteran were to miss on an attack roll, the Veteran may make a reroll with a -2 penalty. This can only be done once per round. A Veteran gains a +1 bonus to this reroll at 6th level and every third level afterwards.
Veteran's Reflexes: At 3rd level, a Veteran gains a +1 Dodge to AC. This bonus increases by 1 at 5th level and every fourth level afterwards.
Veteran's Morale (Ex): At 11th level, a Veteran can let out a rallying war-cry once per day that gives all friendly individuals a +2 Morale Bonus to Attack Rolls and Damage Rolls. This includes non-hostile NPC's.
No Giving Up (Ex): A Veteran's will is indomitable, to the point that even death sometimes cowers in fear. At 17th level, if a Veteran were to take enough damage to enter negative hit points, they can make a Will Save (DC 14 + Additional Damage They Took) to instead fall prone on the ground with 1 hit point remaining. This can only occur once a month.

Playing a Veteran
Religion: Each Veteran is as different as each god that they could follow; depending on their race, they could worship any number of gods, from Pelor to Garl Glittergold.
Other Classes: Veterans tend to be loners, though they can easily get along with other Veterans, Fighters and Barbarians, as these individuals are also soldiers. Clerics can be iffy, depending on the alignment of the Cleric in relation to the Veteran and how that Cleric acts around those not in their alignment. Veterans have respect for Rangers, due to their knowledge of survival in the unfair world that is Nature. Rogues and most other spellcasters tend to put Veterans off, due to often lack of morals and eccentricity, respectively.
Combat: Veterans can be incredibly flexible; from a long-ranged spell caster while also wielding a bow to being a close range brawler that can enhance themselves and their allies at a moment's notice, the type of Veteran built is highly dependent on the player behind them.
Advancement: Leveling solely in Veteran will do you no wrong, as they always get stronger the more levels they garner. Taking a level in Barbarian can be beneficial of the Veteran is taking a more melee-oriented route, while taking levels in Cleric would be effective for expanding their selection of Divine Spells.

Veteran Lore
Characters with ranks in Knowledge (History) can research Veterans to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs. DM's can add extras for flavor text, though this is the base description.
DC | Result |
---|---|
5 | Old warriors of renown, these individuals have dedicated their lives to their craft. |
10 | =As above, but add the following.= No two Veterans are alike, each with their own experiences and skills that make each of them unique. |
15 | =As above, but add the following.= Some Veterans are more well known for their spell casting abilities. |
20 | =As above, but add the following.= There is one thing that all Veterans have in common; there is not a single Veteran alive who has not seen at least one gruesome, horrendous atrocity against their allies or enemies. Sometimes, they've even inflicted it themselves. |
