The Planar Road (3.5e Environment)

The Planar Road

The Planar Road just what it sounds like: a simple, ever-extending road meshed by portals on all sides. Think of this as more of a highway than anything, with multiple forks to choose from and various overpasses above where the characters might be. The smallest roads are only five feet across, while some roads can be as large as one hundred feet across. The edge is marked either by a portal, or sight to another road below.

The Planar Road links to every layer of every plane in the multiverse. Finding the right portal to a certain area takes 5d10x20 hours.

Physical Traits

  • Normal Gravity: On the Planar Road, "Down" is towards the road directly beneath the character's feet.
  • Normal Time: Time flows normally on The Planar Road
  • Finite Size: At the very least, The Planar Road is large enough to have a portal to every known area in the multiverse, often having more than one to accomodate heavy traffic.
  • Static

The easiest way to the Planar Road is through certain color pools on the Astral Plane. In fact, the Planar Road is simply another area of the Astral Plane, simply with a directional gravity and something to actually stand on. At the same time, however, the Planar Road connects with the Ethereal Plane, the Plane of Shadow, and any Transitive Plane a DM has designed.

Plane Inhabitants

The Planar Road is inhabited mainly by travelers; the only "native" species of the plane are "Rentals." To create a "Rental" apply the Vehicle template to a construct of at least Large Size and increase its speed by 10 feet. "Rentals" will unquestionigly be driven by characters for 20pp per hour, or higher depending on the type of construct (DM's discretion). They will not leave the Planar Road.

Movement and Combat

Movement and Combat on the Planar Road is the same as on the Material Plane. At the same time, this can also lead to exciting, high-speed chases.

Features of the Plane

Characters on the Planar Road see only an expansive road paved with a strange, unbreakable stone. There is no food or water on the road, but characters may find shelter in various vehicles that run along the road.

Plane Encounters

Characters can encounter anything on the road, given that many creatures as well as the characters will be traveling. Certain outsiders, such as Demons or Yugoloths, might even act as Highwaymen.

Alternate Variances

The Planar Road may be an adapted version of the Astral Plane (effectively replacing it) by changing the following aspects: The Githyanki now ride in various wheeled vehicles drawn by their Red Dragon mounts, Psychic Storms and Dead Deities are no longer found, and the Githyanki City is now a great string of armored vehicles. Spells that use the Astral Plane instead use the Planar Road. Everything else remains normal.

As a second adaptation, The Planar Road connects the alternate Material Planes, rather than every plane, and replaces the Material Plane as the center of The Great Wheel. The Planar Road still has a multitude of portals; how many there are is the Dungeon Master's discretion.

gollark: Request to send.
gollark: μhahahahaha, RTS frame injection *has* occurred. NONE will be safe from Project ANTARCTIC OBSCURITY.
gollark: I suppose lisp has a good reason for them, because something something recursion.
gollark: Yes, linked list actually bad in the majority of scenarios.
gollark: Project OBSOLESCENT INSOMNIACS is a fractally infinite-pane file/information/cabinet/document/memetic hazard/apiometaspace manager/portal available for the GTech™ Omniversal Computational Engine™.

Tables

Use the same encounter scheme as The Outlands to determine what the PC's encounter, barring any petitionr results.
