Talk:Tome of Demonic Lore (3.5e Equipment)

Balance

Howdy! This is the first time I’ve added something to this site, so I am vehemently open to all manner of suggestions; just don’t crush my novice idealism. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.114.133.160 (talk • contribs) 00:02, 28 December 2006 (MST). Please sign your posts.

Well... To get things started, I see this as very overpowered. However, I want to help you improve this, I do not want to make you feel bad about making this. This idea is very good, the balance is just a little off and that is what I am willing to help you with. Anyway, please do not get offended. So, here begins. Giving a +10 constant bonus to knowledge checks, then and additional +10 (which stacks?) to knowledge when needed it ridiculous for 8,000gp. A +20 to certain knowledge checks is unacceptable. So, I would recommend either making the bonus less (maybe +3 is good?) or rasing the price, and possibly making this an epic item. What are your thoughts? --Green Dragon 01:00, 28 December 2006 (MST)
thank you!
When I was making this item I did indeed think that it was quite overpowered (that's part of the reason I’m asking for help). I must say that I committed the great folly of taking the base rules and not thinking it over. In a similar manner to the true strike spell, Deamoncall is just not set up for crafting into a magic item at base value. It was set up for flavor of course but when applied to the sacrifice rules it just becomes ridiculous. With this spell a 1st level character with 1 rank in knowledge could, given time, summon a frickin Balor! In fact, I am thinking about trashing the sacrifice rules in my game altogether, because even without the spell you only need to have a 7th level character with maxed out ranks in knowledge religion to get a result of 30 eventually, allowing you to summon the most powerful race of demons in the Abyss! I like the sound of +3 to checks, though perhaps I’ll make an epic item along those lines too.
By the way, I have been looking far and wide for were you can create your user name and have so far failed to find anything. As everybody except me seems to know exactly how to do this, I could really use some help. Magical skill bonuses traditionally go by increments of +5. I would suggest that rather than giving a generic bonus across many skills, that the tome gives a +5 bonus to any Knowledge check directly related to demons. Use of the item requires 10 minutes. This also prevents the odd chance that you would use the book of demonic lore to get a +3 while summoning an Angel or Devil. --Dmilewski 05:46, 24 February 2007 (MST)
You create a user in the upper right hand corner of the screen (sign in/create a user). Also, it is looking better; Dmilewski has some good ideas that would improve this again. --Green Dragon 10:13, 25 February 2007 (MST)
For some ineffably vile reason the confirmation code is not being accepted. I have tried to enter it time and again and yet, all is in vain. The only reason I can think of is that it says in order to log on it requires cookies to be enabled. Being one of those people who can memorize 19 rule books and yet can barely figure out how to use email, I do not know whether cookies is active, much less how to activate it. While I’m in this paragraph I would just like to say that I must be as blind as a bat in a zone of silence to not see the “login” tab. Never the less, I am very thankful for the ideas about my item, and concur with your assessment of the implausibility of a book about, written by, and even bound in demons, having anything to say about how to summon an angel. I am also exeptionaly happy that my little baby is getting so much press; at last, something more important than correcting grammar errors! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.114.133.160 (talk • contribs) 22:02, 10 March 2007 (MST). I have no idea what is wrong with your login attempts, and I don't know how to help. However, if you contact Blue Dragon, the techie on D&D Wiki, he will be able to help you. Just contact him and this should hopefully get solved soon... I am sorry this is such a problem. --Green Dragon 11:53, 11 March 2007 (MDT)
gollark: I would have to to get around your GPLization, in this scenario.
gollark: Make the actual CC-side code a simple GPL-licensed frontend for CC computers running in the cloud™ using CraftOS-PC or something.
gollark: Wait, I have a solution, Cloud PotatOS™.
gollark: I suppose the native APIs would count, and you can't really do anything without those.
gollark: Wow, I dislike the GPL now.
