Talk:Improv Artist (5e Class)

This is my first class I tried my hardest

I'm afraid this may be a case of going away, reading through the Player's Handbook, playing a few games, and trying again. Let me go through some of the class features
"Anything I can Get".
  • "Grab anything in 10ft of you for a weapon." - what this is saying is that the character has arms that are at least 5 feet long, or there is magic at work, which is it?
  • If I'm grabbing a creature, there are already rules in the PHB for this: grabbing a creature.
  • If I'm grabbing an object, there are already rules in the PHB for this: improvised weapons.
  • You provide a variety of sizes and damages. Let's take some examples. A Medium object occupies a 5-by-5-ft space. It might be a wooden table, or a 200-lb granite statue. Does it make sense to deal a flat 1d10 damage for both of these? I would argue that a DM using the improvised weapon rule would have the statue deal significantly more damage.
"Nothing is never nothing"
  • You say any small object can be attached to your weapon, but only list four examples, so what happens if I attach, say, a glass bottle, or a heavy book, or another weapon?
  • How long does it take to attach? One action? 1 minute?
  • Rocks are free. I can attach a rock to a greataxe and get a weapon that deals 1d20 damage. This is overpowered.
  • How does attaching some paper to a weapon make it lighter? Is this magic?
  • Advantage on all attack rolls is overpowered. What does "roll dc 10" mean? Is this a saving throw? Which ability score? When is the roll made?
"Ditto"
  • You can't simply take a feature from another class, as this potentially breaks the game or makes your character overpowered. The proper way to do this is with multiclassing, or through feats that grant class-like features.
Essentially, for this class to be useably, it needs a complete rewrite. Even then, the concept of specializing in improvised weapons is too weak to fill an entire class, (you can see the idea is stretched thin here, with some levels without features at all) and would be better suited as a fighter subblass or set of feats.
