Talk:Ghost, Variant (5e Race)

I see the improving templates have been removed, and steps have been made in a good direction, but the fact of the matter is a player-character of this race cannot function in a typical campaign. I'm not saying that's an inherently bad thing, but I believe at the very least a template should be placed at the top of the page so this race isn't sorted into all the other races on the 5e Races page that are designed for general use.

To extrapolate on my point, consider these traits:

  • "Material world. You lack the ability to physically alter the material plane until level 3. Then, you can physically touch or move objects, such as doors, books, small objects." A character of any martial class would be unable to wield weapons or arguably wear armor, let alone hit most creatures. A spellcasting class would have a very limited array of spells that would be of any use. The character would be of little use in a party of normal characters until 3rd level. A DM would need to go out of their way to balance encounters for a character of this race.
  • "Iron Touch. Your form can be dismissed by the touch of any iron. You take 1d100 hours to reform. You reappear at your death spot." If the above wasn't enough, any player-character who entered combat would be out of commission for likely several days if they were so much as grazed by an arrowhead or poked with a dagger. That's not to mention other players who might "accidentally" bump into the ghost while wearing iron or steel armor.

A race like this could be interesting if the DM wants to go out of their way to design encounters around it, but again, the above traits effectively prevent it from functioning in a normal campaign. As such I'm placing a template back on the top of the page. Please do not remove it unless you either adjust the race to be widely usable, or replace the template with a disclaimer that the race is not designed for a typical campaign. - Guy (talk) 12:26, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Original poster comments. This race is designed for a post death character.
