Talk:Extraterrestrial Being (5e Race)

I'm sorry, and I don't mean to offend you, but, have you read the guide to creating races? Some things here just don't add up. For example, the creatures having a walking speed of... 8? They are about as slow as a turtle (if not slower) with that speed, however, it being 8 is very odd. Size should also say the actual size, as in, Small, Medium, Large. As it's 6.281, I'm assuming that'd be Medium, unless you meant 6,281, in which case jesus christ you could consume cities. Stinging Tentacles should say how long it paralyzes and the damage type for it, I'd assume lightning or poison, due to the nature of the creatures. Also, having +4 int with -3 charisma is... interesting, to say the least. I'd recommend making it a little less than +4 int-personally, I'd just remove both the int increase and the charisma penalty, but, your race, your choices-because of +4 in any stat is almost never justifiable for a race. Here's the link for the Race Design Guide, if you haven't read it. [] --Blackbando (talk) 05:31, 15 February 2017 (MST)

Okay, got it. Changed both Int bonus and Charisma penalty to 2, added "Your size is Medium," and added a way of determining length of paralysis in turns. Adding damage type now.

Stinging Tentacles doesn't explain how it works, and should use a saving throw for the paralysis.
I will be nice to you and suggest what you should put:
Stinging Tentacles. Instead of making a melee attack, you can make two melee weapon attacks with your stinging tentacles. The attack modifier is your Dexterity or Strength modifier + your proficiency bonus. On a hit, you deal 1d4 poison damage and the target must make a Constitution saving throw. The DC is 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. On a failed save, the target is paralyzed until the end of its next turn. After you hit with your tentacles, you must finish a short rest or long rest before you can attack with them again.
"Why a saving throw instead of d12" - Saving throws is how D&D works. If a monster is tougher, it should be able to resist better. "Why stunned instead of paralyzed? Why 1 turn instead of 1d4?" - I want you to look at the spell hold monster. This is a spell that can paralyze a monster. This is a 5th level spell. It can last several turns, but it's not on a die roll. The target makes the saving throw again each turn, this is standard for ongoing conditions in 5e.
However, paralysis is a very strong condition: a good spellcaster would have to be 9th character level before they could cast hold monster, and even so, only a few times per day. It's not appropriate to give to a 1st level character. So I've limited it in two ways: First of all you need to hit with an attack (I gave it two attacks, because I imagine two tentacles). Secondly, you can only do this once, then you need to rest.
I'm looking at some of the race's other features, and it shows a lack of familiarity with the rules. It might be worth sitting down with the PHB and reading it cover to cover. Marasmusine (talk) 11:04, 21 February 2017 (MST)
For example, this "alignment tongue". As far as I can remember, that's from 1st edition AD&D. It's not in 5e. Marasmusine (talk) 11:07, 21 February 2017 (MST)
I took some of this advice. Also, it has eight tentacles, and uses them all at once. So one attack. And, anything else that is from the wrong edition or anything? I'm afraid I don't have the 5e PHB.
You might struggle to make new content if you haven't actually got the rulebook. Marasmusine (talk) 11:19, 21 February 2017 (MST)
I mean, if you can come up with ideas, you might find someone to write the page for you. I do offer page rewrites. Marasmusine (talk) 11:20, 21 February 2017 (MST)
