Talk:Elemental Mage, Variant (5e Class)

Is this a different version of the Elemental Mage, or was this left here and not removed when the main one went out of being a work in progress?

The creator of the ORIGINAL Elemental Mage is the owner of this variant, the "Main" one is one that I highly modified and - until recently thought he was working with me upon resolving some of the issues with that one. --Modnar (talk) 06:52, 12 January 2016 (MST)

Formatting issues - you move between Tier, <element tier>, and a specific level requirement. It makes the Elemental Feature system pretty complicated to track.

QUESTIONS/CONCERNS

Please ask your questions and present your concerns below.

Elemental Features

"To choose an EF you must have at least one EF of the same element from the previous tier "

So you may only chose one element, correct? (If so why isn't each element a separate Class?)

"Acquiring a tier 3 feature is a sign of a strong elemental atunement. As a result when you acquire a tier 3 EF from one element you can't acquire any EF's from the opposing element of tier 3 or higher. The opposing elements are fire-water and air-earth. So, if you choose a tier 3 fire feature you can no longer acquire any water features from tier 3 or above."

This suggests that you CAN choose EF from other classes. As does the requirement to have at least 1 EF in a lower tier before acquiring another tier in that same element, which you'd naturally have if you're limited to only one, so which is it? --Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

Stoning

You cause a number of small stones or pebbles, equal to twice your level (max 20), to hover above your head. These stones may be used to make ranged attacks at a range of 50 feet for 1d4 bludgeoning damage. You make a ranged spell attack against the target. You may use your action to fire two as your attack, one as a bonus action, or one as an opportunity attack as a reaction. When firing stones as a reaction you may fire them at any enemy who moves within 15 feet of you as an opportunity attack. The stones remain aloft for up to 2 hours at which time they fall harmlessly to the floor. At 5th level the range increases by 10 feet and the duration by 1 hour, at 10th level the damage increases to 1d6 and the duration by 1 hour, at 15th level the range increases by 10 feet and the damage increases to 1d8. You can use this feature once per short or long rest.

The way that is stated you may make 3 (perhaps 4) d4 attacks at second level - that's 4d4 + (potentially (4 x Dexterity Modifier)), that is overly powerful. An AoO of 15 feet? Isn't
Ranged attack attack is a focus of Air, correct? Is this improperly 'filed'? --Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

====Hit Die Increase==== This feature may only be taken at first level. "When you choose this feature your hit dice become 2d6's. You immediately recalculate your hp as if you had always had 2d6 hit die."

so... as its written, an 17th level Mage, multiclassing into Elemental mage for one level would suddenly move from a 85 hp average to 144hp average. You need to revisit that. --Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

Growth

Is it BOTH spells you cast that many times at day, or is it a pool from which either spell may be cast? (Either way that's 1-3 additional 1st level spell slots, at first level) --Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

Taunt

No limit on the number of taunts per day? --Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

Hearty

Is a feat (just double its power), as a class power. --Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

Earth Heal

10th level you heal 5hp a round, just so long as your engaged in combat. Could I spar with a party member or attack an inanimate object to regain my health? From what I gathered from the older version that is "fire" behavior, is this improperly 'filed'? --Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

Toughened

what really needs to be said about being resistant, always, to melee damage, always, at 10th... always

Earth Mastery

Its listed that Elemental Mastery is a 20th level ability, but each tier has a separate Elemental Mastery, and for Earth, its +4 attribute bump, with an increase of MAX Attribute... at 15th level.

Fiery Fist

"When you take the attack action on your turn you may make two unarmed strikes for every attack you could normally make."

A Monk using Flurry of Blows, does it get 4 strikes? A fighter with Extra attack(2) would make 4 attacks a round, then could action surge to make another 4-6?--Badbard (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (MST)

Healing Waters

Same as growth, you are gaining 3-6 effective first (and later on 3rd) level spell slots.

Several of the powers fail to list their structure for when you regain their use or what action economy is involved in activating them; presumably not all of these are unlimited at will powers.

Thanks

Thanks to Blewsbro for making this class, I've had fun running an Air Mage.

gollark: How can they afford all the IP addresses (
gollark: I'm not actually sure how you would check.
gollark: Or it went the other way round I guess.
gollark: It's not like the various very important technological advancements of the past few hundred years just came from nowhere; there were probably societal things allowing them to occur.
gollark: And unicast, I mean. Just not broadcast.
