Talk:Eldritch Shadow (3.5e Prestige Class)

Balance - 7/10

I honestly think that this class should get a 7 out of 10 mainly because it is real powerful with the giving of the rouge and warlock adjustments but all in all it doesnt give that many special abilities so it should be higher than five. Well thats my take talk to you later. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.129.234.193 (talk • contribs) 07:25, 26 February 2007 (MST). Please sign your posts.

Broken - No Rating

Sorry, this class is horribly unbalanced. Consider this: Greater Invisibility, achieved as a Dark Invocation upon getting the 15th level Warlock is what breaks this PrC. Here's why: Part of being invisible is that any sighted enemy that doesn't have some way to see you (Blindsense, Blindfight, Tremorsense, Scent) is denied Dex to AC whenever you attack. You can see where this becomes a problem: Sneak Attack damage is added whenever a target is denied the Dex to AC for any reason. So therefore, this class, giving you stacking levels to Warlock in ADDITION to adding Sneak Attack Damage, at level 20, you would get 7d6 from being a Warlock, plus 3d6 from being a Rogue, plus another 5d6 from Eldritch Shadow. Add it all up: 15d6. EVERY ROUND. Add in that at level 15, you could also be throwing down Vitriolic Chains or cones, and that's 15d6 to 4 targets or more if the cone hits, with no Spell Resistance, and 2d6 for the next three rounds. Also consider that most Warlocks can also be flying, and have entropic shielding, meaning that Scent and Tremorsense don't work to pinpoint you, meaning that everything that doesn't have blindfight or blindsense is going to be incurring a 70% miss chance on you, and Melee is out of the question. Forget that it doesn't give you many other abilities, who needs abilities when you're raining down 15d6/round as a Standard Action?

Bottom line: 60d6/round at 15th level is disgustingly overpowered. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 164.76.170.76 (talk • contribs) 20:15, 18 March 2008 (MST). Please sign your posts.

  1. You would have to be 20th level in order to finish this class based on the sneak attack and eldritch blast requirements. 5 levels of rogue, 5 of warlock before you even think of starting this.
  2. 20th level rogue. 23 ranks use magic device. Wand of fly, scrolls of greater invisibility.
  3. Entropic Shield only prevents you from being TRACKED by scent. You can still be detected with it. It also wouldn't stack with the 50% miss chance from invisibility, so you'd only have 50% against ranged, not 70%.
  4. 60d6/round? How? You only get one standard action unless cheesing some magic items, and those incur penalties themselves, such as denying your standard action next round. Also, you can't sneak attack with an AREA EFFECT. Vitriolic Cone? 9d6. Period. Vitriolic chain? 15d6 to the first target, if it satisfies the other sneak attack requirements, then 9d6/2 against the other targets. Plus you can only get ONE sneak attack against the FIRST target each round, even with multiple attacks. I saw that cheese get broken when someone with a belt of battle (Magic Item Compendium) and a feat that gives him a save against the daze effect. Even with Greater Invisibility and scorching ray with 3 rays, we double checked all the rules and errata. He only got one sneak attack, on the FIRST ray, even if it missed, the others were normal damage.

Power - 5/5 I give this class a 5 out of 5 because It allows people to finally make a rogue/warlock while maintaining most of the later-level advancements that alternating between the two would normally shortchange you out of. The high skill/ability requirements balance it out nicely, and the eldritch sniper ability mixed with skills and other invocations make this a force to be reckoned with. --68.47.56.196 23:27, 30 March 2008 (MDT)

This has been nullified since it is a hotly contested issue (see above), and therefor an IP does not have a say. --Green Dragon 01:22, 31 March 2008 (MDT)

Wording - 5/5 I give this class a 5 out of 5 because It was well written, I don't recall seeing any major typographical errors, and the abilities were very easy to understand. --68.47.56.196 23:27, 30 March 2008 (MDT)

Formatting - 5/5 I give this class a 5 out of 5 because It builds upon two existing classes very well, and in a format comparable to similar prestige classes such as Eldritch Theurge or Eldritch Disciple, without adding any over-powering new abilities. The eldritch sniper was a nice touch, but seeks to add usefulness to an ability that would otherwise be overlooked by the rogue-ish types. --68.47.56.196 23:27, 30 March 2008 (MDT)

This is nowhere near formatted right. This needs to be re-put through the preload. --Green Dragon 01:19, 31 March 2008 (MDT)

Flavor - 5/5 I give this class a 5 out of 5 because Warlocks have always been portrayed on the edges of society, it only fits that some would have eventually turned to more...illicit pursuits. They've combined warlocks and arcane casters, warlocks and divine casters, all the while ignoring the possibility of rogue warlocks. --68.47.56.196 23:27, 30 March 2008 (MDT)

Power - 2/5 I give this class a 2 out of 5 because it is exceptionally over powered. Stacking Warlock and Rogue levels, plus adding extra sneak attack and invocations on top of all that is simply too much. With some scaling back it could be a feasible class, however. --70.53.48.162 01:37, 25 October 2008 (MDT)

Wording - 3.5/5 I give this class a 3.5 out of 5 because the text conveys the essential message of the effects, but could stand to be more in-line with accepted standards. --70.53.48.162 01:37, 25 October 2008 (MDT)

Formatting - 3.5/5 I give this class a 3.5 out of 5 because much of a full prestige class write-up is lacking, everything beyond the very core mechanics. --70.53.48.162 01:37, 25 October 2008 (MDT)

Flavor - 4/5 I give this class a it's a clever and appropriate combination of abilities, with proper fleshing out of the other parts of the write up it could be a very good PrC. --70.53.48.162 01:37, 25 October 2008 (MDT)

Power - 0/5 I give this class a 0 out of 5 because allowing all of the abilities from each class to stack is insane, and the inclusion of abilities that should be left to those who do not multi-class, such as improved evasion truly makes this a powergaming class.

Wording - 4/5

Formatting - 3/5

Flavor - 1/5 I give this class a 1 out of 5 because it took no ingenuity to create this class.

Possible adjustments?

Reguarding the special requirements; Shouldn't it be Rogue with Sneak Attack 3d6 OR the Warlock equilivent and not both? As it is, it would require a multiclass character in Warlock and Rogue.
