Monks

I am confused to the purpose of Fighting Style names. And what do you mean by "provides two bonuses from the Fighting Style Abilities"? --T G Geko 19:43, 6 August 2008 (MDT)

I can answer both with this--You know the list of fighting style abilities? Each 'fighting style' is made up of two of those options/benefits from those lists. And the naming the fighting style is just done for flavor, and so you can easily keep track of what does what. For example, you could have a fighting style that's entirely defensive and grants you the +4 to Dodge and the +4 to Saves for a round--and you could name it Enlightened Turtle Defense or Lucky Monkey Dance or whatever fits. Or if you have a fighting style that allowed you to overcome DR and Hardness and cut the enemy's speed, you could call it the Iron Knife Hand. Whatever. It's based on all those crazy stances and techniques you see in kung-fu movies and anime, which is sort of the source for the Monk, and it allows the DM to know what you're trying to do, after he's seen a particular Fighting Style in action a few times. Bingo. Although, with the Master and Grandmaster Fighting styles, it's possible to use one of the effects from that list to gain two from the list below. So, say, You gain one Master Fight Style effect and two Fighting Style effects. And I suppose once you got to Grandmaster, you could break it down further--Having a Grandmaster Fighting Style that gave you one Grandmaster effect, one Master effect, and two Fighting Style effects. May I point out that the Wizard gets pretty much the same thing as an area of effect, at much longer range, at level 5? 1d6 fire to a single enemy isn't bad--at least it's level appropriate--but it's not super-amazing in terms of power, either. But, still, it makes it worthwhile to know that me posting this was appreciated. (I reiterate: I didn't write this, the Tome of Necromancy, or the Tome of Fiends. They were done by a couple of guys from a message board I hang out with, and I at least listen when they put something up, so I figured maybe other people would find these thought-provoking, so I posted them on here. Yea, I realized that spellcasters could do stuff like that, that was actually something I was gonna look at after. The "Easter Egg Class Features" section was pretty dead on. I mean look at it, in 3.5 at level 20, a monk can do at most 10d10 damage, spell casters can do godly amounts of damage, but fighters, the cornerstones of melee classes, can only do their weapon damage which usually translates to 1d8.--T G Geko 20:07, 13 May 2008 (MDT)
Funny you should say that. Check out Races of War. It makes some attempt to put melee classes on the same exponential powerscale as other classes. Like, the Barbarian gets Rage Dice (like Sneak Attack), and the Fighter becomes a kind of Heroic Improvisor. It also introduces feats that scale with BAB or whatever. At will means infinite times a day, correct? This is starting to look like 4.0

The Tome series was written back in 2006, so it's got a jump 4e. But anyway, most casters get their abilities a few times a day because they can get such a diverse list of abilities (spells). So if you're not getting the ability to freely add and change your repetoire of tricks and you don't have a huge list of options, it'd make a certain amount sense to allow characters to use them more often to start with. That's a problem with the Paladin, for example. Smite Evil a few times a day? They could seriously gain Smite Evil as a bonus to all their weapon damage and it wouldn't be game-breaking because bonus damage equal to your level isn't really that awesome against level-appropropriate challenges (who must be Evil for this to work on, by the way), and it helps you take down enemy mooks like you're supposed to be able to anyway.Genowhirl 08:36, 19 May 2008 (MDT)

Particularly the Dungeon Veteran and the Progenitor of the Gith. Those are high levels of cool right there, while also being genuinely strong. Open Lock

To jam a lock is not to open it. It is more accuratly said as having broken it.

It's not that big a stretch to go from disabling traps to picking locks. Keep the DCs and, Ta-Da! You just folded a superfluous skill into one more useful. Although I concede that the lock-jamming example isn't picking it. Still, folding Open Lock into Disable Device has some logic to it. --Genowhirl 19:14, 6 April 2009 (MDT)

Also, typos. They happen, often in ways above and behind the wrong keystroke. I'd imagine whoever broke the Tomes into sourcebooks had a couple of moments of mental abstraction while he or she was doing it.
