Creator's Notes: Rake Attack

Though a Rake Attack technically is only applied to a creature who has 1.) succeeded in a Grapple, and 2.) has Natural Weapons: Claws, the term was used here because when in martial combat, the act of digging a weapon into an opponent and dragging it down their exposed flesh is known as a "Rake". For the purposes of this weapon and this action, no Grapple is required. The reason this does not provoke an Attack of Opportunity is because the idea is as soon as the critical lands, the wielder of the weapon drags the weapon downward (Or across) the victim's flesh, not giving them a chance to respond.

Creator's Notes: Rake Damage Values

The values given for the total Rake damage are "(1d6x2 + 4 piercing damage) + (1d6 + 4 slashing damage)". It is most likely noticed that during the "slashing" portion, there is no "x2". This is because the act of preforming the Rake is a separate entity and therefore should not be calculated during the critical. It would be similarly to if the player scored a critical with their longsword and wanted to kick their opponent back 5 feet afterwards. The kick is not part of the longsword's critical. This being said, the Rake does not have to be rolled for; It is automatically assumed to be effective, assuming the player wishes to use this special attack. This is because the weapon's blade is already within the flesh of the opponent and so no Attack Roll is technically necessary.

Creator's Notes: Will Save

The reason the DC is a Will Save and not a Fortitude Save is because they are not making a save against the lacerations on their body, but rather the act of being demoralized and stunned by the brutality of the attack, which is a mental save and not a physical save. Additionally, the act of being Shaken is as much a mental state as it is a physical state. Therefore it is arguably a Will Save.

Queries

I'm finding the flanking feature a bit confusing. 3.5e doesn't have facing, so how do you distinguish between creatures flanking to your side and to your rear? And if you're making a strike as a standard action in place of a move action, isn't this the same as saying "you make a strike as a move action"? Does this allow an extra attack at your full BAB every turn as long as you are flanked? 82.46.12.113 00:57, 17 September 2013 (MDT)

gollark: Aren't those quite expensive? Also, I like seeing colors.
gollark: Most people do have phones now, which work okay as torches, but having to hold one is quite inconvenient and sometimes the battery is drained.
gollark: Lower power consumption, probably.
gollark: To what?
gollark: In theory everyone could just carry a headlamp, but like with reusable water bottles nobody does this.
