Negative Bonus?

Does a Dexterity below 10 provide a negative bonus (i.e. penalty) to AC? I'm guessing not, since then you would have a better AC when flat-footed. But I haven't been able to find an authoritative answer anywhere. Thanks. Cúthalion (talk) 08:13, 5 July 2007 (MDT)

Yes. Strange but true. --Dmilewski 10:45, 5 July 2007 (MDT)
It's not that strange. Immobile objects are treated as having a 0 Dex in addition to a 2 AC penalty, so an unattended Medium object has an AC of 3. Also, being flat-footed only negates the bonus from Dex (a bonus is explicitly defined here and in the PHB glossary as a positive modifierthere's no such thing as a "negative bonus," only a negative modifier), so any penalty still applies.
Hmm, in theory lack of dex just makes you easier to hit and doesn't say anything about damage.
As for an authoritative answer, Dex says the following:
You apply your character’s Dexterity modifier to:
  • Armor Class (AC), provided that the character can react to the attack.
And the rules for Armor Class say Your AC is equal to the following: 10 + armor bonus + shield bonus + Dexterity modifier + size modifier.

If you have a negative dex mod it applies to ac. also if you are denied your dex mod and have a negative, you still apply it. so an unarmored character with an 8 dex has 9 ac and a 9 flatfooted. --Name Violation 16:40, 18 November 2009 (MST)

There's a buggy link there. Shouldn't be hard to find. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.108.164.233 (talk • contribs) 02:02, 5 February 2008 (MST). Please sign your posts.

Fixed. Thanks.--Dmilewski 07:40, 5 February 2008 (MST)

Bonus to Damage?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Dexterity added a bonus to damage for projectile weapons? --Lord Mattos 15:28, 17 November 2009 (MST)

Nope. Only attack. --Name Violation 16:05, 17 November 2009 (MST)
Dang, I was sure. Maybe I should have just checked the Player's Handbook. --Lord Mattos 15:19, 18 November 2009 (MST)
I believe in 4e Dex provides a bonus to damage with projectile weapons, but not in 3(.5)e. Though there may be some feats, classes, spells, powers, etc... that grant such a benefit. —Sledged (talk) 16:26, 18 November 2009 (MST)
If you look in the player's handbook (p.134) it says that your Dexterity modifier is added to your damage with a ranged weapon because it "measures coordination and steadiness, so your Dexterity modifier applies to attacks with ranged weapons."
You quote from the section "Attack Bonus", which describes the attack bonus. It does not say you use Dexterity modifier for ranged weapon damage. The following section, "Damage", explains damage. Marasmusine (talk) 01:54, 13 March 2014 (MDT)

Other material for this ability

Through flexibility and body-awareness, DEX gives ability to maneuver around physical complexity. If 0: bumps into things that are along a straight path to immediate destination, slurring of tongue. Proficiency increases as awareness of movement in the physical world increases.

gollark: Neither, unless you count "running imagemagick" as A.
gollark: Video compression is very cool, though. It's basically how we have DVDs and streaming services and YouTube.
gollark: I guess so.
gollark: Videos aren't actually as big as equivalent image sequences because of very clever compression algorithms like H.264, VP9 and AV1, but still very large, especially 4K and such.
gollark: Images are *pretty* big, although new lossy compression stuff like AVIF can get really small sizes without horrible quality loss, and videos are gigantic since they're effectively images and audio stitched together at 60 frames a second (well, or 25, or various other ones).
